We enjoyed the last sunset of 2012 here at Horsetooth Reservoir and were rewarded (after a slow start) with this glowing winter's delight. After our recent frigid temps, I am pretty sure the last of the open water has frozen. Currently 0 degrees F right now, brrr! ;-)))

Explosive Destruction of the High Park Fire: June 10th, 2012

We have one heck of a forest fire raging right in my backyard. The High Park Fire has proven to be the most destructive wildfire in Colorado state history after destroying at least 189 homes, but there are likely many more. Today it still is growing at nearly 70,000 acres (placing it third in size for all-time CO fires) with 55% containment.

This image was taken on Sunday June 10th, which likely was the day of the greatest fire growth (roughly 30k acres in a day). Thanks to all the brave firefighters! For information on donating to the fire recovery and victims please see here: helpcoloradonow.org/

This image is not an HDR, but I did use three different exposures blended with masks on multiple layers in Photoshop to get the final image. This happens to be a view I see almost nightly driving home from work, if you look closely you can see Horsetooth Rock on the right mountain.

Horsetooth Reservoir and the Colorado Front Range

Horsetooth Reservoir is one of the largest bodies of water near my home here in Fort Collins, CO and is seen here from an aerial viewpoint featuring Horsetooth Rock and Long's Peak rising behind the reservoir.

This was taken on a small airplane ride (we were in a Piper Cherokee) with some friends this past weekend. Aerial photography is a new fun challenge!
