Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces

Fort Photo posted a photo:

Much better when Viewed Large on Black!

A view from what I believe is known as the Main Terrace. I couldn't have asked for better clouds/sky during my brief Yellowstone visit!

The bright white surfaces of the terraces create quite a challenge for the photographer. One can use fancy grads-- or as I did in this case, use HDR to capture the broad dynamic range. Five frames were used to create the HDR. I had four different tone-mapped hdr layers blended down onto the 0 EV frame. I used both Photomatix and Dynamic Photo HDR tone-mapping operators.

That 1.4 billion year-old Sherman Granite sure is pretty, and as it turns out these are the oldest exposed rocks in all of Wyoming. They began rockin' in the free world courtesy of the uplift of the Laramie Mountains some 70 million years ago. Today over 900 climbing routes make this a world-class climbing destination.

Edit: I will leave the text below as a reminder to pay more attention when ingesting photos after a trip... but in fact I took this one at Vedauwoo, Wyoming. For the one that goes with the following story see my next post... So sorry for the confusion! LOL! ;-)))

I spotted this gorgeously lit ancient tree complete with a bluebird in the top middle branches along I-80 west of Cheyenne. This was actually taken on the frontage road across the four lane expressway and four more lanes of frontage road... which just goes to show that serendipity can truly strike anywhere at any time. ;-)))

One of my favorite things about Lake Tahoe without a doubt has to be the trees. The area features a fantastic variety of conifers, with many (such as these old growth incense cedars) reaching dizzying heights. I seem to have a particular attachment to when two trees grow to such an old age in such close proximity to each other, it's all too easy to anthropomorphize some great stories. ;-)))

This image is quite the experiment and I would appreciate feedback. It's my first try with Dynamic-Photo HDR and a graduated nd filter was used for each of the three 3 frames (2 EV apart). The grad made it so I really didn't need to fool with hdr, but I wanted to capture a slightly painterly feel in homage to En plein air art.

As for Dynamic-Photo HDR I give the image alignment tools the big thumbs up! The tone-mapping is another great tool to have but I am sure I will continue to use Photomatix tone-mapping as well. I will say that Dynamic-Photo HDR has to be the price to performance leader among HDR programs at $40 (there's also a free trial) save for the totally free ones.

They do indeed have quite the resplendent shining sunset treats to indulge yourself in on the San Juan Islands. Here's one from Orcas Island.

Image Notes: Total craziness.... 9 frame HDR, too many tone-mapped versions and non-hdr versions to mention were blended. Yes it's on the extreme side, it seems I get the need to do one of these every so often. Hope you enjoy.
