I took my mom out to Lookout Point for sunset. A lot of my favorite images have been made here, and each day brings new light to this picturesque location. While we enjoyed nature's fireworks, mom got to chat with Holly, who works at Allen's Seafood and see's sights like this almost every day.

My first image was a little too dark, this is a re-post.

The autumn colors at Grafton Notch were simply stunning. I found this waterfall on my way back down from climbing Old Speck Mt., the 3rd highest mountain in Maine. Lots of recent rain helped make this beauty sing.

Dream Sky

I wasn't really chasing a sunset this evening, but as I casually took photos of a great blue heron and the seascape around Lookout Point, I could tell a good one was brewing. I needed to get home and whip up something for dinner (especially since my wife, Kim was on her way home), but the sky was starting to take over.

I started shooting away as the light got more and more incredible, blues and yellows turned to purples and golds, and each passing moment was a revelation. I started paying attention to the cloud shapes and formations, and trying to line them up in my composition. I had photographed here before, so I knew the small minimalist island made a great foil and silhouette against the sky. As the time went by, my exposure meter let me know that I was no longer underexposing to bring out more color in the sky... the sky was doing all the work! I wrapped things us just as a few locals made it down to witness the spectacle themselves, and jetted home for some veggie burgers and baked potatoes!

So many lessons learned. One - Simplify your compositions by eliminating any distractions. Two - Stay close to home. You don't have to travel far to see amazing things. And three - live in the moment!

Probably my favorite photograph to date. I love capturing scenes like this.
