Comparing the Size of the Polaroid 403

It has been quite a while since I have photographed some of my vintage gear. So here is one of my two of my recent purchases, a Canon Canonet 28 Rangefinder and a Polaroid 403 Miniportrait Studio Express.

This is a size comparison showing just how large the Polaroid 403 is. It is quite a bit larger than a regular 35mm camera, and it is even on the big side for Polaroid pack film cameras.

Polaroid 403 Miniportrait Studio Express

mkrabb posted a photo:

It has been quite a while since I have photographed some of my vintage gear. So here is one of my most recent purchases, a Polaroid 403 Miniportrait Studio Express passport/ID camera.

The Polaroid 403 Miniportrait Studio Express passport/ID camera was originally intended to take photos for passports and photo IDs. It features four lenses, glass optics, a built-in variable output flash, full manual exposure, PC socket, Sonar rangefinder with distance lights in the viewfinder, fixed focus lenses without infinity focus, and a development timer. The camera also has a switch to change how many lenses fire each time the shutter button is pushed. It can be switched from 4,2,1. The 403 is one of the few instant passport cameras that doesn't need access to an electrical outlet. It runs on four AA batteries.

The Polaroid 403 Miniportrait Studio Express is a relatively rare camera in the United States. After the United States stopped using Polaroids for drivers license photos and passport photos a lot of these cameras were then sold to other countries that still use Polaroids for passport photos. It was challenging to find one that was complete and in working order that was in the United States. But I found this one on Ebay and it came with its original owners manual, shelf cover, lens caps, and a 2005 expired pack of Fujifilm FP-100c.

This is an extremely specialized camera, but because it is so specialized it forces me to be creative with my shooting style. This is one of the strangest cameras in my collection. It is quite literally a hand-held photo booth.

Taken with my recently bought 1969 Polaroid Colorpack II instant camera loaded with Fujifilm FP-100c peel apart instant film. This camera is a blast to use. It was Polaroid's first hard pastic bodied instant pack film camera. It features a plastic lens, a rotary flash cube socket, a cold/hot clip, and a not so helpful viewfinder. The viewfinder on this camera gives you a red square which is the middle of your image, but the coverage of the viewfinder is about 150 percent of the image actually taken. You can see more in the viewfinder than the canera records. It's rather frustrating but I'm getting used to it.
