At Agrosylva we value the importance of biodiversity and encourage our clients to do the same. Our trees and shrubs are all born from seed, thus they all have their own unique and diverse genetic inheritance. We believe that there is currently too little genetic diversity in the plants that serve as humanities food storage and we are trying to do our small part in alleviating the potentially disastrous outcomes that may eventually stem from this situation.

Unlike most nurseries we don’t only sell seedlings but also provide our clients with the same seeds we use in our own nursery and encourage them to start their own home orchard from seed. This method is both much cheaper and ensures a more diverse genetic pool that can help encourage food security by creating a buffer against disease, insect infestations and various parasites.

We are currently putting together a civic science project that will begin in 2013. This project will aim to supply seeds or seedling to people in all parts of the world at a much reduced price in exchange for keeping a few statistics on the plants growth patterns. The client simply commits to send in a few measurements – 5 to 10 – twice a year. The commitment is simply based of the honour system – we trust you will provide us with accurate measurements. Such activities can be fun and can encourage adults, children, teenagers, parents, retirees, grandparents, etc. to spend a little time together working on positive and amusing endeavours. Spending a little time outdoors weather alone to relax and get away from things or as a family spending time together is always beneficial… especially when it entails gathering information that can help ensure a healthy planet for generations to come.

If you are interested in participating in this project or just generally interested in food security and genetic diversity please feel free to contact us at: agrosylva@ymail.com or visit us at www.facebook.com/agrosylva
