Dias returned to the Cape again in 1500, but this time a violent storm smashed his vessel and it lies where it sank in the deep water of the Cape. Cape Point, also known as the "Cape of Storms" has claimed over 20 shipwrecks over the years and has also given rise to the haunting tale of the phantom ship "The Flying Dutchman", still mysteriously seem on occasions. The 1860 lighthouse proved to be too high and often enveloped in cloud so a lower one replaced it, both of which are now accessible and give splendid views out over the rocks.

Cape of Good Hope is the south-western most tip of the African continent (not to be confused with the most southerly point which is at Cape Agulhas 170km to the east). It is said that the two oceans, Mozambique current from the east mingles with the cold Benguela current from the west, but there is no straight defining line. Regardless, Cape Point is one of the greatest landmarks in the world and there could be no better place to have a meeting of two such majestic oceans.

Unlike whales and seals, penguins do not have blubber to insulate them against the cold, but they have a layer of air trapped beneath their feathers which gets severely damaged when coming into contact with an oil spill. Their nests are shallow hollows in soil or stones where usually two eggs are laid. Males and females share breeding and feeding duties by regurgitating fish.
