DIY Light Shed

Wil C. Fry posted a photo:

2012, Feb. 29
Killeen, Texas

For about $12, I made a DIY light shed for shooting isolated images of relatively small objects (size of a DSLR or smaller).

This is pretty much what it looks like. A collapsible clothes hamper, floored and backed with flexible white cutting mats and draped with a white bed sheet.

The flashes (LumoPro LP160 at left and Canon 420EX Speedlite at right) fire into the sheet walls, which diffuse the light. The test object (Canon 60D's battery charger) appears to float in the whiteness.

This image shows that two flashes is too much for my little light shed; the test object is overexposed even at f/22 and ISO100. For subsequent images, I used only the LP160 and at 1/8-power, suspended above the light shed with the Manfrotto Magic Arm.

2012, Nov. 21 - Killeen, Texas

I had been looking at light stands in the B&H catalog when I thought of this. The Magic Arm (upper right) usually holds on by the SuperClamp, but it does have a 1/4-20 threaded hole. So I connected it to the tripod via that hole and used the camp to hold the crossbar. The crossbar is the stem of an old lamp that doesn't work anymore.

Three 99-cent clamps hold an old tablecloth to the crossbar.

That's my grandfather's old Sears tripod in the left foreground, holding the LumoPro LP160. The ProMaster 5550DX Digital flash at at top right on the Magic Arm. Both are fired via Cactus V4 wireless flash triggers.

Lens: Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX DG Macro
Light: ProMaster 5550DX Digital flash at camera right, behind subject; LumoPro LP160 (1/2-power) at camera left, behind camera; both pointed at ceiling and fired via Cactus V4 wireless flash triggers

This image (of the LumoPro LP160 flash) was taken handheld, with the lens only a few inches from the subject. I did not notice any of the front/back focusing issues that are supposed to be prevalent with this lens.
Killeen, Texas

Today, I tested out the possibility of using two off-camera flashes. This is the second one; my old ProMaster 5550DX Digital flash, using an optical slave module to fire this flash whenever the first flash fires. (It's being held up by the new Mannfroto Magic Arm 143A.)
Promaster 5550DX Digital Flash (w/slave module)

Wil C. Fry posted a photo:

The first swivel-head flash that I purchased was this Promaster 5550DX Digital flash. I also had to buy the "digital module" (far left) which attached to the bottom of the flash unit and was (supposedly) made specifically for the Olympus I had at the time. Turns out the module worked just fine for my Canon too.

I also bought the slave module which pops onto the bottom, in place of the digital module, and allows this to be a flash-fired slave.

Addendum: I purchased all this on Sept. 27, 2004

This flash comes with a versatile swivel head, and several settings. Also, the bottom hot-shoe unit is removable and can be replaced with an optical slave unit.

Addendum: I purchased all this on Sept. 27, 2004

This is the back of the Vivitar Auto 30D flash gun that I bought at a flea market three years ago for $10. It remains my most trusted companion when I'm in flash-worthy conditions.

Pros: Always works, simple to understand.

Cons: Not the brightest flash in the world, no swivel head, no TTL

This model has been discontinued, but today I bought a used one from a friend. It looks and acts brand new. (It's nice to have friends who take care of their things.)

I had been considering buying a new 430EX, but got the used 420EX for 1/3 the price.

After half a day of practicing with it, it seems like exactly what I need.
