Ghosts of Trees

Mad Eejit posted a photo:

Once upon a time, there was a little sparrow that decided not to fly south for the winter. However, soon the weather turned so cold that his feathers started to freeze. After a while cow passed by and crapped on the little sparrow. The little sparrow thought it was the end, but the manure warmed him and defrosted his wings. Warm and happy, able to breathe, the little sparrow started to sing. Just then a cat came by, and hearing the chirping, he went to investigate. The cat pulled the little sparrow out of the manure and started to clean him up. Then he ate him.
Lessons learned:
1. Everyone who craps on you is not necessarily your enemy.
2. Everyone who picks up is not necessarily your friend.
3. And when you’re happy in your shit, keep your mouth shut!

Four Winged Victories surround the O'Connell Monument, although they're often mistaken for angels.

They're also mistaken for litter bins, their outstretched hands frequently seen clutching empty cola bottles and fast food wrappers.

This one here is Eloquence, the others are Patiotism, Fidelity and Courage, said to be be principal qualities of O'Connell.

The little bump on her elbow isn't the work of a clumsy sculptor, but an infantryman's bullet (or possibly a rebel, but looks like the wrong direction) from the 1916 Rising. It went through the bronze on the other side of her arm and left the bump here, the bullet is still inside the statue.

One day at a time (explored :)

The great monument at Newgrange.

There are 97 kerbstones aound the perimeter, weighing about 5tonnes. They were moved to the monument from about 15km away. The white quartz stone for the walls was moved from the Wicklow Mountains, 80km away (the walls were reconstructed in the 60s, using the original stone). The entire monument weighs about 200,000 tonnes.

All this toiling was done 5,000 years ago, before the discovery of the wheel or the invention of the horse. The little figures standing between the stones close to the entrance give an idea of scale.

One of seventeen satellite tombs at Knowth.

The main mound (behind camera) is 12m high, and 67m across. The mound contains two passages which reach nearly to the centre. They are almost aligned with the rising and setting sun on the equinoxes. It's possibly a coincidence, but it would be one hell of a coincidence.

The similar monument at Newgrange, less than 3 miles away, has a passageway aligned with the rising sun on the winter solstice. On the shortest day of the year, and for two days either side, sunlight beams in through the 19m long passageway to illuminate the central chamber. The rest of the year the chamber is in darkness.

The alignment of the passageways at Knowth may have been disturbed by medieval building works. Unfortunately no photos allowed inside Newgrange, and the Knowth passageways are only accessible to archaeologists.

The tombs are approx 5,200 years old.
