The San Juan Mountains in SW Colorado finally got a dumping.
Three feet at Durango Mountain Resort and up to 4' in the higher elevations.
I just love going up the first morning after the storm clears with the fresh air, brilliant blue skies, and of course the gorgeous fresh power clinging to to the trees and the uniform covering on the forest floor...

It has been raining the past two days which is unusual in January for South West Colorado. It is suppose to snow 2' in the San Juan Mountains tonight and tomorrow.

All this moisture has me fired up about the alpine flower season this summer which should be great if the moisture keeps coming like this. What a difference from last Winter!

In anticipation of a great coming season I've uploaded a shot I took 2 years ago when we had plenty of moisture. Because of the drought last Summer this same shot would have looked more brownish with no King's Crown flowers and yellow daisies. I hope everyone else is having a good Winter as well! We can do without the fires this year...

San Juan Sunset

Steadfast Christian posted a photo:

I decided at the last minute to head up the canyon late in the afternoon. The weather forecast called for partly sunny which are my favorite conditions for sunsets. Unfortunately, it was a cloudless day with a brilliantly blue sky. As I got further up in elevation, I was pleasantly surprised to see a small band of clouds hovering over a series of alpine peaks. I decided to set up in that location as this was the only area with at least a few clouds. I trudged through the foot deep snow and made my way to a good vantage point. The wind was brisk and I quickly realized that I hadn’t dressed properly.
By the time I set up a video camera to capture a time-lapse, the saturation from the low lying sun was illuminating the peaks. Mean while, as I was busy setting up, I didn’t notice that a beautiful scalloped cloud formation blew in from the west which would be incredibly beautiful if it only took hold at sunset.

Busy snapping away at the saturated peaks, I didn’t realize how cold my hands were getting until it was too late. The sun set behind me and then the light show began. The sky turned into a fiery red but unfortunately, the peaks were no longer saturated. It’s hard to get everything to work together. Regardless, my now numb fingers where having a difficult time pressing the button. I was trying to focus on the live view to get the proper exposure but I had to keep looking at the shutter button to squeeze the trigger because my finger was so numb I could feel anything. I knew the sunset wouldn’t last long so I put common sense aside and kept firing off shots. I was down to 15 on my shutter speed without a tripod (tied up with the timelapse video) so the images weren’t as sharp as I would have liked.

Oh well, I was able to witness another spectacular alpine sunset. Despite having the most painful stinging fingers on the way back after they thawed out. I would do it again in a heartbeat. As you all know, the adrenaline rush with sunset photography is hard to match…

With all the fall colors nearly gone, I went searching for one last shot but came up empty. On the way back home I noticed a few clouds were finally around so I decided to setup for a sunset shot at a favorite spot. Once again, it appeared I would come up empty as the sunset would not develop.

Just as I was going to leave, I noticed a fine red hue start to develop on the distant horizon. I figured it would quickly die off but the unpredictability of sunsets finally turned in my favor.

As usual, this shot didn't fully capture the beauty before me but my eyes surely did...

I had the prevelege to visit The lower Mainland of BC again. What a place to visit. I didn't get to take many landscape pictures as I spent most of my time fishing for salmon (it was fantastic). I did slip in a few pics here and there.
This picture was taken atop a cliff above Crescent Beach BC. The point of land on the left is Point Roberts which is strip of landlocked property located in the United States. Unless by boat, US citizens living there have to go through Canada to reach the US mainland.

The sky was cloud free during the sunset but an unusual amount of haze made for some nice colors. They have been going through a 2.5 month drought just like us in Colorado. They were finally blessed with rain just as we were leaving.

Mini Full Rainbow Surprise

Wow! Another rainbow surprise in such a short period. This time, I decided to drive up a canyon a short distance from town to check out the Fall colors. A storm had moved in with rain/snow flurries and intermittent periods of sun just the way I like it. With conditions like that, I usually find a way to drop everything and run to the hills.
When I reached the summit, the weather turned to a white-out for a brief period and suddenly cleared, exposing the beautiful fall colors scattered in the canyon below. The sun burst forth directly into the moisture ridden sky creating the perfect conditions for a rainbow. However, it was only mid-afternoon which seemed too early for this to occur.
To my pleasant surprise, not only did a full rainbow appear, this one was up-close and personal. It was a mini-rainbow that stretched from one side of the small canyon to the other. I have never seen a rainbow like this before. The only thing close would be the type that sometimes appears near waterfalls. It was so close, so small, and so beautiful and I was the only one witnessing it almost at eye level.
This was a totally different experience from the last massive rainbow last posted here. This one was just more personal. Another life changing experience I will not forget…

Rainbow Surprise!

Steadfast Christian posted a photo:

Late yesterday afternoon I couldn’t resist the awesome cloud structure finally around so I dropped everything and headed up to the San Juan’s in hopes of catching some early fall colors. As I gained altitude, only a handful of Aspens had started to change but to my great surprise, the rain/snow storm that was pounding me on the way up started to break and a beam of sunlight quickly penetrated the alpine peaks before me (where I was pretty wet sitting out in the storm despite having a rain coat on). This would have been enough but then… a rainbow began to develop to the left of my vantage point and before I knew it, it blew up into a beautiful full rainbow. The lens I had on couldn’t capture the whole thing so I quickly scrambled through my backpack and changed to my wide angle just in the nick of time. I didn’t dare try and set up for a panorama for fear of losing the shot.
The wide angle did its job but as with wide angle lenses, it pushed the mountains and rainbow way off in the distance. But hey, I captured it! Of course it didn’t do it justice as the full rainbow literally felt like it was right on top of me. I could clearly see both ends of the bow directly below me (I’m sure there was a pot of Gold right there).
Almost as soon as it started it was over with the exception of a small section to my right that hung around long enough to become part of the sunset. Glad I'm able to share it with you. It was definitely a life altering experience.

Captured this shot just before dark on an overcast sky. Just a hint of a sunset helped to highlight the wildflowers in the quickly fading light. Definitely another pitch black night hike back to the car.

It's definitely been a tough year to find alpine wildflowers. After searching for an hour around 12,500 ft I finally stumbled upon a large patch of King's Crown which had been mulled by an elk herd who obviously found the flowers to be a real treat, especially since there wasn't hardly any flowers elsewhere.
I hung out in this spot the rest of the afternoon to catch the different light changes and was rewarded with a beautiful sunset.

Caught this patch of Columbines just before a storm set in. Lightning struck at the top of the peak and I knew it was time to get out of there. Taken at 11,500' where I found the wildflowers had already peaked with some already wilting. The recent rains have prolonged them for a while but I bet they will be gone in a few weeks.
Never seen so few Columbines up there. Taken in the La Plata Mts. (San Juans)
