Delicate and delicious holiday sugar cookies make their annual appearance. Jen and her friend baked and decorated these on Saturday while their husbands took their toddlers to gymnastics class.

Buoyed by hundreds of foam cubes, Owen scrambles awkwardly toward terra firma. We attended an an open gymnastics class for toddlers and one of the highlights for Owen was being gently tossed into this foam pit.

Tiny, computer-guided chisels carve a solid piece of composite into a custom dental prosthetic to repair my long-suffering molar. The technician at my dentist's office designed the 3D model of my crown, based on scans of my existing teeth, before sending it to the milling machine down the hall.

Defying both fears and hopes for some sort of momentous alignment or cataclysm, the twelfth day of the twelfth month of the twelfth year of the twenty-first century passes quietly in Sonoma County, albeit with a better-than average sunset. Though no one knows for sure, I suspected when I saw this that the coming solstice, too, will be ordinary, despite Mayan prophecies, zombie fears and conspiracy theories.

Ornaments placed safely out of toddler reach, our Christmas tree shines in the bay of the living room. The lone ornament able to survive Owen's ministrations and thus remain at its home in the base of the tree has been the stuffed polar bear.

Despite clear warning from a posted sign, Owen chills in front of the neighborhood bodega. We were on a walk to a nearby schoolyard when he paused to take in the sights of the JC.

Repurposing the set from the play, the choir performs a rousing rendition of the Leonard Cohen classic. In a unique program for a school concert, several iconic songs by Cohen, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits were reimagined for choral voices.

Emblazoned with a sticker from the fire department, Owen's red sweatshirt takes on special significance. A firefighter responding to an call at the community center where he has mini-music gave him the badge.

Entranced students look on while the communications director discharges her fire extinguisher on a basin of burning gasoline. The dramatic exhibition was the result of a fire safety training for the whole staff.

Just in time for the holidays, we procure an aptly-hued second vehicle. We held out as long as we could but, with rainy weather and an ever more complicated schedule, we just couldn't make it work with one car and a bike for two adults and a toddler.

Seemingly in defiance of gravity, an abandoned soda can perches at an unnatural angle on a lunch table in the courtyard. A student later explained to me that a little over half-consumed soda has just the right amount of ballast to make this trick possible.

Rising above the kitchen counter like a Frank Gehry building, nearly our entire collection of pots and pans drips in the drying rack. The delicately-arranged stack nearly came crashing down when I went to put the pots away later.

The right-triangle piece proves a bit of a challenge for Owen. Triangles aside, he's become quite adept at matching the shapes and colors, even correcting himself when he gets a matched shape in its opposite color slot.

Encouraging messages on sticky notes dot the mirror and walls in the men's bathroom. The notes, left by unknown benefactors, provided compliments such as "your hair looks great" and "she likes you" to those regarding themselves in the mirror.

Despite the use of a telephoto lens, my phone fails to capture the grandeur of the nearly-full moon rising over campus. I did however like the colors and the tilt-shift effect created by the lens.

The last pot of the night remains on the table as the victor departs with his winnings. I hosted a poker night for friends and colleagues at my home on the first night of the long Thanksgiving weekend.
