So you have got down the basics. Maybe you have bought a few strobes, have worked with a few portraits subjects and have even developed a few lighting techniques of your own… What’s next? Steven and Christopher thought long and hard about the best way to followup our introductory workshop and give you MORE!

Our advanced workshop does just that. Watch each professional photographer work through a full photoshoot, explaining every detail of their complex lighting setup, directing their models and providing valuable tips and tricks of their workflow as you look on. After each demonstration, you slide into the driver seat, utilizing any available equipment and techniques you’ve just learned to create your own photos. After each setup, you’ll sit in with Steven and Christopher to evaluate your results on an LCD monitor before jumping back in to reshoot each set. As usual we’ll have 2 professional models w/ makeup and styling provided.

This is a 4-hour jam-packed evening event that will focus on YOU making great light and great pictures.

Ok, so I have a really bad habit of posting images to flickr that best showcase the lighting rather than the best shots from a particular series. What I posted before was actually a crappy shot with shotty processing in my opinion, but it showed the lighting better. This shot is one of the several where everything else seem to work well, ie expression, posing, mood, processing, etc.

The LAST creative portrait lighting workshop is about half way full. To be honest, I haven't had time to promote anyplace other than Flickr so far (that has usually been enough in the past). That will change in the next few weeks where I should actually have a bit more time. You can view details and register with us at www.ZeroOneStudio.wordpress.com

We have plenty of great lighting techniques to be discussed and demoed and shot by the students. The "edginess" of my more notable works is what had been missing from the previous workshops, where more emphasis was placed on the "lighting" aspect than the "creative" one. This time, we seek to change that by really pushing the envelop in terms of developing style, drawing the most from your model/subject and creating mood and intrigue within our portraits.

ok, so this was shot like a year ago but I think it is a sb800 into 36" softlighter camera left and a bare sb800 camera right zoomed at 85mm. I am pretty certain of those details now that I think about it.

natural hard light, a big reflector, a few experimental lightroom adjustments and ...

not a whole lot else. this wasn't the light I set out for, it was the light I found. One of my favorite shoots from the past several months mainly because there is no artifical light used and its a male portrait client which is still rather rare. (No complaints though, I have worked with some incredible women and have a lot of surprises in store for those following my stream)

I will more than likely delete 5 of this series of images, comment which ever you dislike the least

natural hard light, a big reflector, a few experimental lightroom adjustments and ...

not a whole lot else. this wasn't the light I set out for, it was the light I found. One of my favorite shoots from the past several months mainly because there is no artifical light used and its a male portrait client which is still rather rare. (No complaints though, I have worked with some incredible women and have a lot of surprises in store for those following my stream)

strobist info: b800 into beauty dish camera right... were you expecting and more? yeah, me too.

BUT, I should announce the big switch I made several weeks ago. Maybe not a switch so much as several enhancements to my current lighting setup. Most of which I have yet to actually use in a photoshoot but all purchases were the result of a LONG and well thought out plan to upgrade the photographer. Everything is in flux right now, unfortunately at the busiest time of year for a portrait guy, but I am rolling with it quite well. New websites under development for portrait and commercial business, currently planning and shooting an entirely new portfolio for the latter, major lighting and equipment upgrades, classes for the summer to help manage business better, to refine my portfolio and for public speaking to continue to refine my ability to put on a great workshop :D (next dates should be July 12th for the Creative Portrait Lighting workshop and the 13th for the shorter crash course of Advanced Lighting Techniques, keep watch for updates). I wont burden you with ALL the details but it basically feels like having 3 fulltime jobs simultaneously which is actually not as bad as you think since I sleep even less during the summer.

All of this really falls in line more or less with a discussion being had in my Strobist Austin group as to what should be upgraded first within a photographer's plethora of tools( i believe this fellow's decision was between new lighting or a new camera body). My answer and what I myself choose to practice is this:

1. education (like a great book such as Kirk Tuck's Minimalist Lighting, Joe McNally's The moment it clicks, photography classes or a workshop; kinda like the one I will be hosting in July on the 12th and 13th, or something to better learn to use what you have available)

2. lights (not necessarily expensive ones either. most all of my stream has been shot with only 2 speedlights and cheap or homemade modifiers. Even though I have since invested in a lot of new light gear, I am still using mostly 2 speedlights for my portrait work right now. For several reasons but mostly familiarity. To all that will listen I preach that it is best to start with one light. And use that one light to the fullest of its capabilities. When you start to see it's limitations in creating YOUR images, then add another as you see fit, and so on and so on. This same principle would apply to modifiers and lens purchases. Use what you have then buy what you need)

3. Lenses (shouldn't be a huge investment if you make smart buys, I have found that for quality-ie resolving power, contrast, sharpness, quickness, etc, for the dollar, that the tamron lenses are BY FAR the best value. If you shoot portraits; 17-50 2.8, 28-75 2.8 and the 90mm Macro. Toss in a nifty 50mm and be done with it. By the way, these lenses are still available for purchase from me used but in great condition)

4. Body (Body's come and go frequently. At this point, it's better to wait for the next set of updates than to buy a new __insert current model here__ unless there is a specific capability useful in creating YOUR photos that is presently a limitation in your current camera. The D90 for instance could be a significant improvement over even the d300 in some aspects. As long as you have something thats still takes pictures, why fret?)

Anyways, there's my .02 for all those who never would have asked for it. As for the new lighting equip, it is everything I need to create anything I want. After having shot as much as I have, for a long time felt like I was running into "limitations". I have problem solved within those limitations of the gear I had(and could afford) as much as I could for the past 8 months that I have been looking to upgrade. Every new purchase had an old purpose.

BUT, I should announce the big switch I made several weeks ago. Maybe not a switch so much as several enhancements to my current lighting setup. Most of which I have yet to actually use in a photoshoot but all purchases were the result of a LONG and well thought out plan to upgrade the photographer. Everything is in flux right now, unfortunately at the busiest time of year for a portrait guy, but I am rolling with it quite well.
if lenses could talk

definitive.images posted a photo:

Strobist: fill with ab800 at 1/16 into beauty dish front camera left, sb800 at 1/2 into photoflex xsmall litedome camera right to subject, sb800 into 8.5x11" white paper folded around as a diffuser camera left behind subject, fold paper as front fill, small canon p&s box to left of subject with another folded sheet of paper taped to it hanging just above the lens to provide reflection in glass.

I did take a few setup shots when I started but tweaked it alot before making this photograph so I could post it but it would be very misleading.
ANYWAYS, I am selling my secret weapons, the Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) and the Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro. The answers to about 75 or so emails inquiring about my lens choices. Both are sharp as all hell and for me have been the best value in lenses without question. No lenses give you more bang for the buck. Asking price is $375 and $325 for the 90mm Macro. To get an idea of the type of performance to expect, just about everything in my flickrstream has been shot with either but 90% is this beauty pictured here though the image was captured with the 90mm. Full length portraits with the 17-50mm which has MUCH better contrast and flare control than either nikon 50mm primes and is nearly as sharp; and most all the headshots are done with the 90mm which is a gift and a curse because it tends to reolve every last detail which sucks if you are shooting a face that needs plenty retouching but is also pretty good because of the fidelity of the detail captured.

Tamron's warranties are transferable and the 90mm has 4years and the 17-50mm has 5years left. No issues with either through extensive use.

see it BIG

oh yeah, there will be another Creative Portrait Lighting workshop in Austin Texas, June 14th. While it hasnt been officially announced just yet, you can find details at zeroonestudio.wordpress.com and contact me to register early!
