Abax parallelepipedus - Compound Beetle Eye

SequentialMacro posted a photo:

This photo was lurking about in my macro file on my PC so i decided to edit it a bit and stick it up out of interest.
A while ago i took photos of this massive guy eating a grape, seen here ; www.flickr.com/photos/sequentialmacro/6189697969/in/photo...

Click here for a larger image - www.flickr.com/photos/sequentialmacro/6732686093/sizes/l/...

which is really impressive seeing each individual lens up close, you can see the colour inside of the entire structure instead of just black from far out ;

This single non stacked image was taken at F11 with a 50mm f1.8 Prime EF lens a while back before i sold it. For the flash i used the AFD360 at 1/16th power to the side of the camera with a flash chord of course.
thanks for looks and have a nice day all !

Another Fly Stack

Here's another fly stack, something about flies just really interests me, the amount of detail on their bodies is seriously amazing.
This was really just testing the light in this image, i may need a second flash for the under part of the insects to lighten the bottom half of their bodies up a bit.

Stacked from 70 images Pmax Zerene stacker, i used for this 28mm Prime lens reversed onto Bellows.

Any comments are appreciated !

Common Crab Spider | Ozyptila praticola

SequentialMacro posted a photo:

Hey all.

I'd firstly like to say i found a Salticus Scenicus, healthy, good size and inquisitive enough to know what the camera lens is, so i'll have some high magnification shots of him in the next week or so, can't wait since it's been months since i have came across one !! But more about that later, for now i want to talk about this 'spider'.

I found this 5mm crab spider under the same rock as the beetles, it's like the rock is manufacturing interesting things for me to photograph recently... He was walking sideways to get away from me, so i knew it was a crab spider ( hence the name ) and i wondered what eye structure it had, and since i have never seen anyone on Flickr produce high mag photos of these spiders i thought i'd give it a go...

Again i shoot live insects so he fussed a lot and ran away - this always frustrates me but i manages to keep my cool and eventually after an hour i got 12 photos worth stacking, this is the finished product above. I used photoshop to stack the images and increase Contrast/Vividness/Colour to help it's features stand out.

It's eye structure is not nearly as impressive as a jumping spiders, but i think i'll keep investigating these spiders as he seemed very aware of his surroundings and was quite instinctive when i shone the light on him to find shade as quickly s possible as they have eyes much more sensitive to ours and more of them.

I will continue my search for an interesting Crab Spider known as the White Crab Spider (Thomisidae) which i am sure is in the UK.

If you look below you can get an idea of how small this guy was and some other photos of him being very still for the camera !
Bug Eye \ Black Beetle 2 - Notiophilus bigguttatus

SequentialMacro posted a photo:

In response to the Black Beetle photo on a rainbow photo i posted a week ago
(found here ; www.flickr.com/photos/sequentialmacro/6920965687/in/photo... )
I also found another beetle the next day under the same rock but i noticed immediantly that it's eyes were much larger and it's shield had a different shape. I also recognized it from Insect-O-Saurus Photostream who produced a great close-up of its eyes a few weeks back !

When i was photographing this beetle, i noticed a strong smell after holding it for a few minutes... i am not sure this is common of beetles, though may have meerly just been an attractant or chemical it produces to sway a predator off the tracks of where it is hiding, such as a Hedgehog.

Again, photographing him was very hard, he was very fast and didn't want to keep still so as always (trying not to kill him) i kept him in place with some food to keep him occupied, worked a treat !

This was a focus stack from 8 images i think at f16 or f18. Don't think i'll have the aperture as high anymore, lose a lot of quality in the image. Size of Beetle - 5mm.

This is the same shield bug, still asleep on my desk after 4 days of me finding him, he could have walked off or flew away but i think he enjoys that warm lamp too much !

Will keep taking pictures of him as he is the only insect in sight worth photographing and he is pretty amazing, by far the most colourful specimen I've ever photographed anyway !

As always, have a nice day !

(Stacked from 20 images, but by the looks of it i should have went for more, some bits out of focus here, but with practice i'm getting there)
