Three blocks from my home in the Phoenix Homesteads, Pinchot Avenue is lined with tall palm trees and tall fir trees and this time of year, giant candy canes of Christmas lights. This "camera shake" image shows a row of them in the dark where I moved the camera to create mini-candy canes of the streaking lights.

It's that frazzled time of year. Everything is coming, going, and shooting right over my head. How is it in YOUR neck of the woods? This "light painting" was indeed a case of "camera shake". Happy accident, ha ha!

In contrast to the previous image where I shared a macro of a withered ice plant bloom, this is a bloom from the same plant, only in perfect form, just opened. The stamens are lush and full of promise for any comers and the smooth yellow petals are without blemish. A perfectly delightful sight to see and better in macro. Large view, quite sunny!

Yep, we expect the Grinch this year at our home, but happily, it doesn't feel so strange and we will have our own version of a merry time. This inflatable Grinch is one of many such figures displayed on a lawn about a mile from our home in central Phoenix. Nice smile and great green, eh?

Big Balls for Christmas, Phoenix

These giant balls hanging from the trees in a front yard along East Osborn Road were fun to see. I am pretty sure these are hard plastic and not inflated ornaments. It must have taken quite a while to set up all the spotlights from the ground and then get them directed to the trees with the mini-light strands with the hanging balls. An imaginative decoration for a place unlikely to have snow for Christmas.

An animated snowman in LED lights tips his hat on and off in quite a nice moving decoration. In the background a teddy bear rides a rocking horse, also moving. Seen at a holiday open house in Phoenix, Arizona. 44th Street just south of Camelback Road. This is the best holiday house I've ever seen, well worth a visit. Desert Bug has wonderful photos of much more of the yard and home. Me? I got too cold to push the shutter button any longer, LOL. Believe me, it was cold in Phoenix on Sunday night. Next time: 1. bring tripod and 2. wear Isotoner gloves.

First Christmasy photo of this season, the star looks much much better with the way the bokeh blurs in the far off background than the way the cacophony of the multitudinous lights distract attention every which way. Discovered while traipsing around my neighborhood environs in central Phoenix, this home is on 44th Street about 9 blocks south of Camelback.

Yes yes, I know you may be expecting photos of food, but THIS I bet is a surprise. My son Drewski likes to mix about 4 cereals together for his morning breakfast at times. Fruit Loops, Frosted Cornflakes, Grape Nuts and Kix are in this soggy mix. Anyway, for those friends going crazy with travel or food preparation today, hope you have a fortunate, cheery and sweet day today.

Green Against Purple, Oxalis

Every year for the last 6 years I have been photographing the interesting varieties of oxalis plants (weeds!) at my home in Phoenix. This image is one of three taken to show the emergence of the first variety. Seen here as a stark contrast of green against the purple of the wandering Jew plant, the painterly look comes from using a 100mm macro lens with shallow focus.

In about December, I will start seeing the familiar yellow, pink, and double-ruffled flowers popping up above the green shamrock leaves. The set shows the many varieties and stages of the life cycle including flowers, here.

Love the vivid colors just glowing from the cars in the massive "Cruise on Central" car event held in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. If anyone knows this type of car and the unusual back hatch, please let me know so I may ID it properly. By the way, a number of my images will feature the people IN the cars. Using a speedlight and shooting across to the west gave a bit of backlight yet made the foreground subjects appear sharp and glowing.

Elmac Mural: Look Away

At the Chocolate Factory in downtown Phoenix, a delightful mural and complete building painting attracted my eye. By Elmac (El Mac) this is another lovely large scale work of great sensitivity, a portrait of a young boy. I called it "Look Away" although I have no idea of the artist's title. The next image is a closer view of just the central portrait.

This image shows the beautiful desert chanteuse of the mural, a powerful motif of this building wall art.
