After the kids were asleep and my wife and I had watched our regular StarTrek NG episode, I went out into the cold night to shoot todays photo. Brought my 300mm and a flash with a small softbox. I think I popped the flash about 4-5 times whilst walking around the tree as the camera was exposing for 30 seconds.

Today my plan was to photograph a nice old bridge I know of. The light was not that great so I dropped it. Hopefully I will pass by one day when the light is better and with some luck there will be fog. So I leave you with this fully tilted (no shift) photo of a cold soccer training field.

From the room we had in Cornwall, we could see this church tower. With all the kinds of weather we had when we here there, we never saw the same exact "picture" twice when we looked out over the fields in the direction of this church.

Aurora Borealis - 2011.03.12

We were lucky to have pretty clear skies as the Aurora Borealis, rarely seen this far south, danced for us once again.

This time I set the camera to shoot one frame every ten seconds. With a six second exposure time at f/5 using ISO 1600 on the Canon 5D mark II, the speed is almost right, and the quality of each frame is surprisingly good. My Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III does not produce quality like this at that ISO.

I had to get up 2 times during the night to change batteries. The larger part of the images had very calm or very little action, so this is the best 1000 images of about 3000 that the camera shot during the night.

Still, the most violent movements of the Aurora are barely captured with this 10 second interval. I most go down even further to get better movement.

Aurora Borealis - 20110311

I noticed the rare occurrence by chance in the middle of the night. Show with the Canon 5d MK 2 and the 24mm Tilt & Shift from Canon. Sadly in my tired excitement, standing outside bare-feet in the snow clad only in my boxers, I tilted the lens fully. So the edges are out of focus.
One shot every 30 seconds, each a 20 second exposure at ISO 800, f/5.6, seems to be to long/slow. The most exiting movements pass by to fast.

The earth-quake in Japan hit an hour after the last frame in this video.

Sunset and stars in the cold forest

Both real-time and time-lapse parts in this one, showing the sun setting on a small lake called Burudvann in Norway. Shot with the Canon EOS 5Dmk2 + 50mm f/1.2 and Canon EOS 1Dsmk3 + Canon TS-E 45mm f/2.8. Time-lapse intervals varied from 5 seconds to 15 seconds or so in the second time-lapse sequence.

A couple of notes:
I forgot to use a manual white balance.
The 1Ds3 shot about 1300 frames in the freezing cold (-20 Celcius / -4 Farenheit )
I left my gloves at home.
After setting up for the second time-lapse sequence, I walked+drove home, and came back a few hours later to pick up the camera.

Got up at 3 in the morning to prepare for the shoot. I was at the right spot a little before 5 o clock. The stars were shining down on me, and I had just witnessed the aurora borealis a few hours ago. And then, a low cloud cover materialized over me. At least I got to test the gear and battery setup, and my new sleeping bag.
