Cradle Mountain is a mountain in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, Australia. Rising to 1,545 metres above sea level it is one of the principal tourist sites in Tasmania, owing to its natural beauty. The mountain is composed of dolerite columns, similar to many of the other mountains in the area.

One of the world’s best multi-day walks starts here, the Overland Track, that leads up hill and down dale through a variety of extraordinary landscapes to finish 80 km to the south at Lake St.Clair, Australia’s deepest lake.

Tessellated Pavement

A tessellated pavement is a rare erosional feature formed in flat sedimentary rock formations lying on some ocean shores. The pavement bears this name because the rock has fractured into polygonal blocks that resemble tiles, or tessellations. The cracks (or joints) were formed when the rock fractured through the action of stress on the Earth's crust and subsequently were modified by sand and wave action.

A characteristic example of this formation may be found at Eaglehawk Neck on the Tasman Peninsula of Tasmania. This example consists of two types of formations: a pan formation and a loaf formation.

The pan formation is a series of concave depressions in the rock that typically forms beyond the edge of the seashore. This part of the pavement dries out more at low tide than the portion abutting the seashore, allowing salt crystals to develop further; the surface of the "pans" therefore erodes more quickly than the joints, resulting in increasing concavity.

The loaf formations occur on the parts of the pavement closer to the seashore, which are immersed in water for longer periods of time. These parts of the pavement do not dry out so much, reducing the level of salt crystallisation. Water, carrying abrasive sand, is typically channeled through the joints, causing them to erode faster than the rest of the pavement, leaving loaf-like structures protruding.
Arthur River

Arthur River is the name of both a river and a small township on the northern part of the West Coast of Tasmania, Australia. At the 2006 census, Arthur River and the surrounding area had a population of 121.

It is south of the town of Marrawah. Named after Sir George Arthur, Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemens Land (1824-36), the river is fed by several tributaries including the Frankland River, which was named after its discoverer, then the colony's surveyor-general. The region has been exploited commercially for timber and fisheries, but today is mostly a centre for tourism.

On the coast near the mouth of the Arthur River is a plaque titled The Edge of the World. North West Coast Tasmania, and a poem by tourism pioneer Brian Inder, who coined the term, referring to the coastline at Arthur River which is regularly lashed by the gales of the Roaring Forties.

On Saturday, I decided to head out with Mel Sinclair to find some storms out West. Predictions had been for a severe day. We saw a front coming from Warwick and decided to head that way using the radar only - by luck we decided that going over Cunningham's Gap would be a bad choice and instead headed around Lake Moogerah. Here it caught up to us and it intensified over the mountains. Staying well back we decided to head away from the storm and watch from a distance. It continued on its path to eventually come straight through the Brisbane CBD where it dumped heavy rain, hail and produced a nice rainbow afterwards.

This is the last image in my series of storm photos from last weekend - feedback on these has been fantastic so far so I'm really pleased to share another one of these with you.

Here the storm is just about to engulf the Brisbane CBD, I just had to share what the sky went like when it was almost upon us where we were safely under a pagoda @ Mt Coot-tha.
After the storm passed Mt Coot-tha we decided to head to Nudgee Beach and have a look for some lightning. Not much luck. However, it did provide with an opportunity to be able to try out my new Singh Ray Gold and Blue Polariser. Not sure of the results! The colours are a bit crazy but interesting nonetheless - a filter I'll need to work out how to use best.

So today I decided to head out with Mel Sinclair to find some storms out West.

A rework of this previous tree (slightly different photo, slightly different colours) I have shared from Tasmania - love it to bits. Had a good breakfast with it the morning after this photograph.

Here is my trip video of my trip to Tasmania in Autumn 2011 - you can check it out here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmjd0WyzkX0
Binalong Bay

Binalong Bay is a small coastal town in northeastern Tasmania, situated at the southern end of the Bay of Fires. Originally a fishing hamlet, the town is now a village with a large proportion of holiday dwellings. It has a beach, small harbour (known as "the gulch") and a cafe.

On a trip back in November 2010 we were out around Moreton Bay and found this superb specimen of a tree. I just loved the dead tree in the foreground, fantastic.

Moreton Bay

Moreton Bay is a bay on the eastern coast of Australia 45 km from Brisbane, Queensland. It is one of Queensland's most important coastal resources. The waters of Moreton Bay are a popular destination for recreational anglers and are used by commercial operators who provide seafood to market.

The Port of Brisbane coordinates large traffic along the shipping channel which crosses the northern section of the bay. The bay serves as a safe approach to the airport and reduces noise pollution over the city to the west of the runway. A number of barge, ferry and water-taxi services also travel over the bay.

Moreton Bay was the site of conflict between indigenous Australians and early European settlers. It contains environmentally significant habitats and large areas of sandbanks. The bay is the only place in Australia where dugong gather into herds. Many parts of the mainland foreshore and southern islands are settled.

Moreton Bay is described as lagoonal because of the existence of a series of off-shore barrier islands that restrict the flow of oceanic water. The tidal range is moderate at 1.5–2 m in range. Moreton Bay has an average depth of 6.8 m. This shallow depth lets light filter through to the seafloor, allowing an array of marine plants to grow which support a diverse range of fauna. The bay itself covers 1,523 km² and has a catchment area 14 times larger, covering 21,220 km². The waters of the bay are mostly blue in colour. Western parts of the bay are sometimes tinted green from algae, brown from suspended sediments or yellow-brown from humic runoff.

Sheffield

Sheffield is a town situated 23 km inland from Devonport on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia's island state. Sheffield has long been the rural hub for the Mount Roland area. The Sheffield area is well known for its high quality butterfat production via dairy farming. The area is suitable for lamb and beef production. The town of Railton is nearby. At the 2006 census, Sheffield had a population of 1,397.

In North West Tasmania, Sheffield as one of the many early townships was settled in 1859. The town was named 'Sheffield', by Edward Curr after his home town in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.

Sheffield has become a major tourist attraction due to it being promoted as "Town of Murals", based upon the instrumental contribution of local tourism pioneer Brian Inder.

The first town mural was painted in Sheffield in December 1986. Since then over 60 murals depicting the area's rich history and beautiful natural scenery are painted on walls scattered throughout the town and buildings along the roadside. The murals attract an estimated 120,000 people to the town annually.

In the heart of Sheffield, there are a number of studios open to the public where visitors can watch the artists as they do their work. Artists of every discipline, including photography, fine art, glass, woodcraft, pottery, ceramics and specialised crafts.

Mount Roland

Mount Roland is a Conservation area in Tasmania. It is in the north of the island, near the town of Sheffield. It rises to 1234 metres and there are a number of well-marked bushwalks suitable for a day of pleasant exercise. There are walking tracks from both Claude Road and Gowrie Park to the summit.

Russell Falls

Russell Falls are located on the eastern boundary of Mount Field National Park, in Tasmania, Australia. Accessible by a paved walking track, the falls are a popular tourist attraction.

They were first named the Browning Falls after the original discoverer, c.1856, but were known as the Russell Falls after 1884, by which time they were already a popular tourist attraction. The Falls Reserve was established to protect them in 1885. In 1899 the Russell Falls were selected as one of eight images to be used on a set of pictorial postage stamps, aimed at promoting the then colony's growing tourist industry.

Russell Falls are located 100 metres downstream of Horseshoe Falls.

The horizontal rock strata over which the falls flow are Permian siltstone, and their more-resistant vertical faces consist of sandstone. The surrounding plant life includes swamp gum and sassafras.

Mt Field National Park

Mount Field National Park was founded in 1916, making it, along with Freycinet National Park, Tasmania's oldest national park. The area around Russell Falls has been protected for its natural beauty since 1885, when it was set aside as Tasmania's first nature reserve. The last known wild thylacine was captured in the region in 1933. The reserve was called "National Park" before 1946, but was officially renamed to its present name in 1947.

Tasman Peninsula

The Tasman Peninsula lies south and west of Forestier Peninsula, to which it is connected by an isthmus called Eaglehawk Neck. This in turn is joined to the rest of Tasmania by an isthmus called East Bay Neck, near the town of Dunalley (about 60 kilometres or 37 miles by road from Hobart). Many smaller towns are also located on the Tasman Peninsula, the largest of which are Nubeena and Koonya. Smaller centres include Premaydena, Highcroft and Stormlea. The Conservation Park, located on the main highway at Taranna, is a popular local visitor attraction along with the Port Arthur Historic Site and a number of beaches.

The local government area is the Tasman Council and the major route to Hobart is the Arthur Highway. The population is around 2317 (estimate June 2006), which rises to around 8000 in summer months, mainly due to Port Arthur. The area of the peninsula and of the Local Government Area is 660 square kilometres (250 sq mi), which amounts to a population density of 3.5 inhabitants per square kilometre (9.1 /sq mi).

The Sheffield area is well known for its high quality butterfat production via dairy farming. The area is suitable for lamb and beef production. The town of Railton is nearby. At the 2006 census, Sheffield had a population of 1,397.

Stanley

Stanley is a town on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia. Travelling west, Stanley is the second-last major township on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Smithton being the larger township in the Circular Head municipality. According to the 2006 census, Stanley had a population of 458.

In 1825 the Van Diemen's Land Company was granted land in north-western Van Diemen's Land, including the Stanley area. Employees of the company from England settled in the area in October 1826.

It was named after Lord Stanley, the British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in the 1830s and 1840s, who later had three terms of office as British Prime Minister.

A port opened in 1827 and the first school opened in 1841. The Post Office opened on July 1, 1845 but was known as Circular Head until 1882. In 1880 the first coach service between Stanley and Burnie was established.

In 1936 a submarine telegraph and telephone cable from Apollo Bay to Stanley provided the first connection to Tasmania from the mainland.

Today Stanley is a tourist destination and the main fishing port on the north-west coast of Tasmania.

The most distinctive landmark in Stanley is The Nut, an old volcanic plug discovered by the explorers Bass and Flinders in 1798, who officially named it Circular Head. It has steep sides and rises to 143 metres with a flat top. It is possible to walk to the top of The Nut via a steep track or via a chairlift.

Tourists regularly travel to Highfield (a farming region on the north west of the township) to view the picturesque northern beaches with The Nut in the background.

The port on the southern side of The Nut is also a regularly used fishing spot.

It is possible to walk to the top of The Nut via a steep track.

Tourists regularly travel to Highfield (a farming region on the north west of the township) to view the picturesque northern beaches with The Nut in the background.

The port on the southern side of The Nut is also a regularly used fishing spot.
