The pilgrimage

This is the sunrise of the same day I went to Neist Point in early March.
There was sunshine predicted, I didn't expect the weather to be this good. Totally blue skies (except for the band of clouds that blocked the light for half an hour after sunset ofcourse) which was a bit of a disappointment. The day before the skies were beautiful, so I expected a lot.
But it was a cold and clear morning with a lot of wind. So much wind in fact that I had to go and warm up behind the peak I was shooting from before packing my bag again. Because of the harsher light I decided against a panorama and went with 4x5. I cropped it a little bit, I had to choose between too much foreground or too much sky and decided that some extra foreground would be more useful when cropping.
In hindsight I probably should have tried and shoot some more high contrast black and white images closer to the Old man, but my hands were almost frozen anyway, so going back for breakfast was probably the best way to avoid more frustration.

The climb up there in the dark/twilight felt a bit like a pilgrimage. A mandatory location on Skye almost for a photographer. That feeling was probably exaggerated by the circumstances being not quite what I had hoped for.

An almost cloudless sky, except for the few on the horizon, but ofcourse there was a big one in front of the sun almost the whole sunset. Luckily it popped out for a minute so I could at least get 1 sheet exposed. The sun wasn't at full strength, which was actually a good thing, so I could keep detail in the shadows.
I'm usually not big on shooting postcard-like images, but this one is growing on me. I was hoping for an interesting sea and wild sky, but you can't have it all. At least I could stand on the edge of the cliff, because there was hardly any wind.

Wasted a terribly grey day driving around Rannoch Moor for nothing. Just high clouds with no definition whatsoever.
So the next day I decided to look for a forest. I decided not to go too far in case the weather improved and just went to the Glencoe Lochan forest. Although small it is very diverse. There are a few very nice mossy areas.
Although shooting forests is not my strong point, I do always enjoy trying to find a clean composition. I didn't have much luck in the open areas, but shot a few detail shots to pass the time.
The more I look at this one, the better I like it.

Just came back from three weeks shooting in Scotland and have a lot of developing to do. This is one I don't have in 4x5, so I can safely share it.
I put my view camera away about ten minutes earlier because the sun on the mountains was gone and I thought the sky would be better closer to the sun. So I got out my DSLR to be able to adapt more quickly, but ofcourse returned to my original location when the sky lit up. I had expected the light on the foreground to be gone by now, but amazingly there still was some in just the right spot on the JCB (Joe Cornish Boulder), as it is apparently now known.

I tried to steer clear of 'the classic shot' as much as I could on my trip, but this one is so obvious on that beach that it didn't feel stupid to shoot it anyway.
Got a great show on my first evening there. I returned later in the week tot try and get a more original shot, but there were no clouds that day.
At least I got this one, even if it wasn't on Velvia.

I had been scouting for an upcoming side project for when I'm done switching to large format. I decided I want to try my hand at shooting some architecture.

At the end of the afternoon I just wanted to get my camera out for a bit, just for fun. So on the way back I stopped at an industrial estate and took a few shots, just before sundown. It's a great area, with lots of colors and activity. I'll definetely have to scout it out a bit more when I have the time.

Taken about 5 minutes from the place i took the last photo.

Nothing special, but nice and peaceful.

Another shallow DOF panorama.
Native size is 43x129cm @360PPI, a bit overkill for a shot like this.

The 85 1.8 wide open gives these panoramas a nice softness, with still excellent resolution in the sharp areas.

>>> Pressing [L] for a large view is a must. <<<

Today was probably the last day of sunshine in the fall, so I tried to take full advantage.

I wanted to experiment a little with long exposures and high contrast black and white pictures today, but there was hardly any wind to get the moving leaves that I wanted for the long exposures. So I tried a few stitched photos with extremely shallow depth of field instead. I have tried this technique in the past but never very serious and Photoshop could never make much of them. So I decided to give a thorough test.

This file consist of about 8 files of my 5D II with the 85/1.8 wide open (resulting in 95 megapixels.) I chose this lens because it is very sharp wide open and has good bokeh. My 50 1.4 is slightly soft wide open. That is nice for portraits, but here I wanted a lot of detail so I could make a large print.
This file has incredible resolution, which is very hard to show on the web in a jpg.

I couldn't decide between the colour version and the black and white. They are both quite peaceful, this one being a little quieter.

j1eke posted a photo:

A nice foggy and cold morning. Beautiful lanes and perfect light. Although I lost all dexterity in my hands, I was quite happy to be out shooting.

Frustration with the process already set in during the morning though.
The last year or so I have been gravitating towards taking panoramas and as a result I have to shoot so many images to get a shot (this one is 7 shots across I believe and each one is an HDR of 7 or 9). I spend days waiting for my computer to be done with the next bit.
Besides that, it is quite hard to compose a stitched panorama accurately and fill the frame completely. You kind of have to shoot from the angle you want and then hope the computer doesn't warp the pano too bad, or your composition is messed up and you have to crop it differently.
I wanted to keep my options open and decided on digital a year ago, but I'm now thinking of buying a Shen Hao 6x17 camera and see if my dark room skills aren't too rusty. I can shoot 4x5 on the side if I want to keep a more conventional aspect ratio. The lenses for the 6x17 are large format anyway.
I hope that way I can focus on composition and lighting more, instead of the technical aspect of needing enough frames to have enough quality.

Sorry for the rant, I'll keep you posted.

The fall colours are almost here in Holland. I've been scouting some locations the last few weeks. This morning I had a great sunrise shoot at a local estate.

Since I mostly shot panoramas, some in HDR, my computer isn't happy with me today. More on that later.
This is one of the few images I captured that doesn't need assembling before I can review it. Couldn't resist it after all the complicated shots I took this morning.

I shot it with my 85 1.8. I had to freelens it because I couldn't get close enough otherwise.

We spend a great night at Rumps. It was our first proper sunset after a week of drizzle. We came in about an hour before sunset. Had the walk up in great light on Polzeath and the cattle. When we came there the sun was mostly obscured by clouds, but it popped out a few times. This was only a gap of around a minute. The rainbow was already there, but without the sun on the land the image was hardly worth taking. Luckily, I was ready when the sun came back for a last glimpse.

The next few days were rainy again. We moved on to the Bedruthan Steps, but returned a few nights later, to see it again in the sun. There was sun that day, but hardly any clouds, so the sky was very dull. Photographers are never happy..

Kynance Cove, close to the most southern tip of the UK, Lizard point. After we spent the sunset here the night before and not getting quite the light I wanted we said we would try to make the most of our 1 day on the Lizard Peninsula and try to return in the early morning if the weather was good. Although the light apparently never is really good (maybe in spring or winter) at either sunset or sunrise, it was definetely worth getting out of bed for. The Cove was totally deserted and looking back we wished we had more than just those two moments to spend there.

I wasn't sure about this one, but after a day it kind of grows on me. Plus I always had a little soft spot for 6x17, so when i do shoot a panorama I try to keep the classic ratios (either 6x12 or 6x17). That way it is easier to try and fill the frame while composing. That is hard to do when you are just shooting individual frames otherwise.
I also like the low contrast and tried to keep it as soft as possible while still having enough contrast in places to show the light.

=====================
Technical details:
Canon 5D II + 17-40mm (9 vertical shot@26mm so a wide vista indeed).
Mounted on a Benro Panorama Set.
No ND filter needed

Just returned from our holiday on the Cornish coast. The weather was a bit touch and go, so I kind of had to pick my battles with the photo opportunities. A lot of the places we went we only stayed for one day, so it was hard to pick the best spot with the available time I had. No real time to explore. Discovered some great places to return to for a more thorough exploration.

This was shot at Hartland Quay. The tide was in, so we couldn't go on the beach and walk on the rocks, but the sky was interesting enough to make it a very special experience nonetheless!
