Lion After Kill

After ingesting most of a Cape Buffalo, male Lion (Panthera leo) with belly almost bursting checks out our vehicle. He and another male lion, also an active participant in the take down of the cape buffalo, had just walked away from the kill. The duo had left behind a lioness and a yearling male lion, who were finishing off what was left of the cape buffalo carcass. Unfortunately for the lioness and the youngster, a dozen hyena kept hanging around as they tried to eat their meal in peace. When they were finished, the duo walked away, and left the kill to the hyena. Masai Mara, Kenya.

Licking her nose to make it more sensitive to odors, young female Leopard (Panthera pardus) checks out her surroundings. There was a herd of impala nearby - along with several safari vehicles. She went underneath one of the vehicles, and used it as a blind as she stalked the impala. Almost silent and very low to the ground, this female leopard came within striking distance of the impala herd. Unfortunately, one of the "look-out" impala spotted her and sounded the alarm. The herd got away. Masai Mara, Kenya.

Leopard (Panthera pardus) on the move after Impala. This female leopard had found shelter underneath one of the safari vehicles, using it as a temporary blind as she stalked the impala. Unfortunately, one of the "look-out" impala spotted her, and the group scampered away. Masai Mara, Kenya.

Cheetah Bookends

Brother (left) and sister Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) searching for prey on the open grasslands. Although you don't see the bigger cheetah brother, this 2-brother and 1-sister cheetah group was at rest after an unsuccessful take down of a Thompson's Gazelle. The smaller of the brothers and the one sister flanked the "Tommie", while the bigger brother chased it down. The bigger brother cheetah jumped on it, but the smaller more evasive Tommie luckily gave it the slip. Lewa, Central Kenya.

He and another male lion (also bursting at the seams) had taken a large cape buffalo down overnight. The two looked very groggy as they searched the open grasslands for a stream. Masai Mara, Kenya.

These young Lion cubs (Panthera leo) emerged from their hiding place just before sunset, there were 5 cubs in total. The standing cat clearly established its leadership qualities. Their massive Dad was relaxing under a tree, across the ravine from their hiding place, ready to pounce on anything that messed with his kids. Masai Mara, Kenya.

Lion slakes his thirst in morning light, Masai Mara. We spotted this Lion walking away from a Cape Buffalo kill one morning. HIs belly was almost bursting. Once he found this little stream, he lapped up water for over five minutes - must have needed plenty of water to wash down his meal.
