"Inside The Orion Nebula"

The Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby starbirth region, is probably the most famous of all astronomical nebulas. Here, glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1500 light-years away. In the above deep image in assigned colors highlighted by emission in oxygen and hydrogen, wisps and sheets of dust and gas are particularly evident. The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye near the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion. In addition to housing a bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium, the Orion Nebula contains many stellar nurseries. These nurseries contain much hydrogen gas, hot young stars, proplyds, and stellar jets spewing material at high speeds. Also known as M42, the Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years and is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as the Sun.

This is a failed 12-photo panorama I shot during the Lyrid Meteor shower at Rose Canyon Lake during Blue Hour. My last battery died while taking the pano which is why I didn't capture the entire milky way galaxy band. I still think it came out alright since I caught a couple Lyrids in this shot.

"ROR Star Trail"
This star trail was created while I was observing and photographing deep space objects with Astronomer Blythe Guvenen at the The ROR (roll-off-roof) observatory. The ROR is located at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona and is one of the commonly used observatories during their Astronomy Tours. Fortunately, there was no tour going on that night so we had the universe at our fingertips. The telescope pictured is a 16-inch f/8.4 carbon truss Ritchey-Chrétien reflector on a Paramount ME with a TEC APO140ED (140-mm f/7) refractor mounted on top. To the right, you can see the 500 ton Mayall 4-Meter Telescope.

The Double Cluster (also known as Caldwell 14) is the common name for the naked-eye open clusters NGC 884 and NGC 869. which are close together in the constellation Perseus. NGC 884 and NGC 869 are at distances of 7600 and 6800 light-years away, respectively, so they are also close to one another in space. The clusters' ages, based on their individual stars, are relatively young. NGC 869 is 5.6 million years old and NGC 884 is 3.2 million years old, according to the 2000 Sky Catalogue. In comparison, the Pleiades have an estimated age ranging from 75 million years to 150 million years. There are more than 300 blue-white super-giant stars in each of the clusters. The clusters are also blueshifted, with NGC 869 approaching Earth at a speed of 22 km/s (14 mi/s) and NGC 884 approaching at a similar speed of 21 km/s (13 mi/s).

In this single exposure wide angle image you can see Galaxy M81 on the left surrounded by blue spiral arms. On the right marked by massive gas and dust clouds, is M82. These two mammoth galaxies have been locked in gravitational combat for the past billion years. The gravity from each galaxy dramatically affects the other during each hundred million-year pass. Last go-round, M82's gravity likely raised density waves rippling around M81, resulting in the richness of M81's spiral arms. But M81 left M82 with violent star forming regions and colliding gas clouds so energetic the galaxy glows in X-rays. In a few billion years only one galaxy will remain. -Panther Observatory
