Sunrise over the Tatoosh Range, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington.

A fabulous morning to be out on the mountain finished off by the lodge's breakfast buffet with Dene, David, Scott, and Darren.

If you are bored this weekend, check out the photography exhibit over at the Oregon State Fair in Salem. You'll see a name or two you recognize on exhibit.

Single exposure with Singh-ray 3-stop hard ND. Only some levels adjustment in post-process. If only I had received the full frame wide angle lens I ordered in time. I had to make do in crop mode with my old crop wide-angle... I guess that's still 16MP, so maybe I should quit whining.

Temple of the Big Kitty

Temple of the Great Jaguar, Tikal National Park, Guatemala.

A simple clean shot of Temple I with decent lighting and sky. But in the interest of full disclosure, I have an admission to make. This isn't minimally processed. I removed a large amount of scaffolding from the right side of the pyramid. At some point in the past year or two, they pyramid suffered a lightning strike which required archeologists to stabilize and rebuild part of the top. I think it looks much nicer without scaffolding. Fortunately, it wasn't too hard to remove against the cloud background. You can still see some that I left at the very top. That would have been too hard to clone without making something look off. Don't yell at me when you go here and it does not look like this!

Ancient Geometry

Temple I in Tikal National Park, Guatemala.

We spent only a few hours at this fascinating site. When we first arrived it was mostly overcast. Our first stop was the Great Plaza. Lighting not so great for photos. Dark foreground and blown out solid white skies. However, as we were getting ready to leave the site, the sun started breaking through the clouds. So I hustled back to the Great Plaza to haphazardly retake *all* of the shots I had taken earlier here. If I do say so, a smart move...

Travel photography certainly poses some significant logistical challenges for getting good shots. Most of the time you just have to get lucky. I'm just glad I have more to show than a bunch of dull shots with boring whitewashed skies.

The Year of the Maya

Temple I rises over 150 feet above the ancient city of Tikal, one of the largest and most significant Mayan cities. This site was featured in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Perhaps fitting that I start the new year with a Mayan temple as 2012 is the last year in the Mayan calendar before it rolls over to the next "b'ak'tun", an approximately 394 year period in their count of time. Contrary to popular belief, the calendar doesn't actually "end" this year. As to the predictions of what might happen when we roll over, well, have fun debating that... If you like, I can sell you a few highly overpriced cans of beans just in case.

Summer in Glacier

I've been slowly working through images from various trips over the summer when I finally got to my images from Glacier, which I was none too excited about. The road closures and the very late wildflower season made any photography here at the prime locations and prime times of day difficult at best.

None of the images from this sunset (our only sunrise or sunset in Glacier given the difficulties) seemed to have any potential, which is why it has taken so long to get to them. The color in the sky wasn't terribly strong and the dynamic range seemed terribly high. An ND grad filter was doing nothing to help - I needed one that was roughly the shape of that mountain which of course I didn't have. But noting that I had exposures of differing focus points and exposures I decided to try blending them to see what came out. The result is what you see here - a focus and exposure stacked, manually blended image. I would like something better from this amazing park, but this will have to do for now. Any feedback appreciated.

The High One

Clouds part to reveal Mount McKinley on an autumn day in Cantwell, Alaska.

The Tanana Indian word "Denali" means "The High One". Quite fitting for North America's tallest mountain. A more classic reflection view of the mountain can be found at Wonder Lake, but this requires taking the park bus and camping, which we did not have time to do. Many of the views of Denali from Denali State Park along the Parks Highway are just as good or better than the views from inside the National Park.

Morning Splendor

Morning light at Mount Rainier, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington.

I particularly liked the early morning sunlight on the flowers. The "hat" on Rainier was just an added bonus. A blend of two exposures provides tack-sharp focus throughout (except for the one flower in the lower right which was apparently blowing around in the breeze). A Singh-Ray 3-stop hard ND balances out the sky a bit.

Mind the Gap

This seems to work well in B&W as well, thanks to the texture provided by the lichen, but I decided to stick with color. This is from the second of two mornings spent here. Both yielded some nice sunrise color, however despite the fact that I think I like this composition more, the previous morning provided the best light show due to the clouds:

The large Columbia Icefield in the Canadian Rockies straddles the Continental Divide. Three rivers originate from the icefield: the Athabasca River, North Saskatchewan River and the tributary headwaters of the Columbia River.
