The stone piles popular in many traditions of Buddhism, it is said that first stupas were simply stacked stones. There are some legends of "saints" hiding teachings and sutra translations in mountain altars to be discovered hundreds of years later, which were just stones stacked up beside paths. For some these also accompany the offerings to the to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas implying that the strength of the offering is in the intention, not the ornateness of the altar on which we place it.

Due to the work and personal commitments it has been a long time that I logged into Flickr and I think this will continue on for a while and I will stay away for some more time. This is my offering to all my Flickr friends. Please accept my apologies for not visiting your stream or not responding to your comments. Unfortunately my absence will continue for some more time, please bear with me for a while. Have a great time and a wonderful time.
Life On Road

Last week I was on road trying out my hands at street photography and I was surprised to see life in so many forms. My first reaction to Street Photography - "It is tough", the hunt for composition on road filled with clutter is a tough job. I was struggling to either shoot everything or nothing. I experienced extreme feelings, not just in terms of finding compositions, but also at the quality of life on road. Not that I have not seen this life and felt the pain earlier, but photography makes me think and look at a much deeper level.

During these days majority of the world is busy celebrating the vacation season with Christmas and New Year just around the corner, but do think of people for whom these things mean nothing, it is life as usual for them.

Merry Christmas and Very Happy new year to all my flickr friends, hope that the coming year makes life good for the world. Will try and do my bit by taking on some social activity in the new year.

Found this shot from my archive was shot almost a year ago and somehow I forgot about it. Fortunately I got reminded about this picture while reading something about contrast and I realized the contrast I captured in this shot. The contrast goes from primitive to the modern mode of transport.

Some people might find the editing at much extreme but I added a little hard contrast and grain in order to match the contrast in frame.

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush
- Moondance (Sung by Van Morrison)

Nothing other than the song above could explain my feelings while taking this shot.

This is another magical experience from the state of Ladakh, India. This is the magical lake called TsoMoriri.

Tsomoriri or Lake Moriri (official name: Tsomoriri Wetland Conservation Reserve), is lake in the Changthang (literally: northern plains) area in Kashmir. The lake is at an altitude of 4,595 m (15,075 ft); it is the largest of the high altitude lakes in the Trans-Himalayan biogeographic region, entirely within India. The lake sits between Ladakh, India to the North, Tibet to the east, and Zanskar in the west. (courtesy: Wikipedia)

~ rohit (Out For A While) posted a photo:

I shot this picture in Thiksey monastery, which is one of the biggest and beautiful monastery around Leh.
About 20 kms from Leh, Thiksey is an imposing monastery and one of the finest example of Ladakhi architecture. This Gompa (monastery) is situated on the top of the hill and forms part of Gelukpa order.

The 12 storey monastery complex contains numerous stupas, statues, thankas, wall paintings, swords and a large pillar engraved with the Buddha's teachings, there are sacred shrines and a many precious objects to be seen.

This place will just make you fall in love with itself, a feeling of peace entices you as soon as you step into this monastery. Far away from the commotion of the cities that we live in, this place will just take you to another world. I got a chance to interact with a a few monks who live here which was an enriching experience. I believe they are one of the most simple people on earth today.

Silhouettes are one of my favorite categories and this silhouette is from my last, fun filled trip to Goa. I believe everyone wanted their picture at this spot and it was kind of favorite on the day we visited one of the beach in north Goa. It was sunset, and I was not happy with photographic journey till I took this shot of a couple helping each other to move around the rocks. I think it was a cute moment which I captured as a silhouette to avoid invading their privacy.

Sunsets have always amazed me with all the lovely colors and changing hues that a setting sun creates. I was witness to one such lovely sunset on my recent trip to Goa, the beach destination in India. Me and my wife were mesmerized by the colors in the sky and the sea which just felt like heaven, and that is what I have tried capturing in this shot.

Taken at Anjuna Beach, Goa, India, this shot and the wonderful experience of sunset made my trip :-).

Have been on and off from flickr a little but trying to catch up as always :-).

This time I have something different to upload, different in ways that I went out of my usual way of clicking photos. This was the first time I was out on street with the camera and approached someone asking for their permission to click, which was really enriching. She was selling some toys on one of the red light signals in Hyderabad, India. I also learned about her past and where she actually came from, it was indeed an enriching experience for me.

I had some mixed feelings of that of joy and sorrow while clicking this shot. It made me salute the spirit with which she is trying to make the ends meet, with a smile, and at the other I realized that there is another side to a red light signal. For people travelling on vehicles the red light signal is just a stopover, causing delays in their life, and for people like these it is chance to make their living. An irony of situation and what one thing can mean totally different things to different people.

I wish we all could keep an upbeat mood, as she did, no matter what the circumstances are. All I could do was just salute to her spirit to live life to the fullest.
Not many times I came across this site where farmers are working in the field with umbrellas. A site worth capturing, a wonderful adaptation according to weather. Hats off to these ladies who are working in the field against all odds of weather, snakes, mosquitoes. It is this hard work which will provide the food grain for us.

Nocturnal Landscape

~ rohit (Out For A While) posted a photo:

So I am back after two weeks of break due to busy time at my work, with one more night landscape shot. There is an interesting story behind this picture which can best be explained by the wonderful words from the master of Landscape Photography:

Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer - and often the supreme disappointment.
- Ansel Adams
The story is not actually related to the aesthetics of this photograph but the physical test that I went through while I shot this picture. This is Tsomoriri !!!

Tsomoriri or Lake Moriri (official name: Tsomoriri Wetland Conservation Reserve), in the Changthang (literal meaning, northern plains) area, is a High Altitude Lake (HAL) with an altitude of 4,595 m (15,075 ft) in Ladakh, India and is the largest of the High Altitude Lakes in the Trans-Himalayan biogeographic region, entirely within India. (Courtesy: Wikipedia.org)

Spending the night outside the room at such high altitude when I was suffering from cold made it the toughest night of my visit to Ladakh. The winds, the cold and less oxygen made it very tough for me and i woke up with a very severe head-ache the next morning.
But how can anyone anyone have missed the shots and missed experiencing such beautiful landscape at night.

Hope you enjoy viewing this shot.
The Wanderer

~ rohit (Out For A While) posted a photo:

I went out there
In search of experience
To taste and to touch
And to feel as much
As a man can
Before he repents

The Wanderer
A famous song by U2 sung by Johnny Cash.
The Wanderer is a song about redemption, a song about one man's search to find himself. And in my experience there can be no better place than Ladakh for a person to be one with oneself.

We found this small lake, or should I say a water body, on our way to Nubra Valley. All of us just shouted and asked our driver to stop as soon as we saw the reflection in this small lake. The water was muddy yet offering a perfect reflection of the beautiful surroundings, provoking all of us to stop and capture this beauty with our cameras.

So there I was on this location, and yet thinking of how to add that extra punch and communicate what I was doing at this secluded place on this earth. I was travelling, wandering in this part of the world and trying to capture the beauty with my Nikon D5100. Suddenly a thought came to my mind, I took of my shoes, place it on the stone, bent down to the level of the road and fired the shutter to capture this scene which will remind me of my travel in years to come.

Hope you all enjoy it.

Finally I was able to shoot a star trail during my recent trip to Ladakh, India. It was a trip of lifetime, the hangover will continue for a long time to come. I think anyone, who has been to this place, would agree to the fact that this place is heaven on earth. I waited for two to three hours for the clouds to clear to start my star trail shot, and I think mother nature helped me to capture this beauty in my camera.

We rented this bike for a major part of our trip and what a machine it was. The Royal Enfield, it made our lives easier by going everywhere we wanted it to go desert, rough roads, hills, mountains, even to places with no roads.

Tribute to Ladakh and its people.

Pangong Tso is one of the most beautiful lakes I came across in my life. It is a 137 Km long lake which extends from India to Tibet/China. All together it covers 604 sq. km. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water.

This was shot from the location where we stayed near the lake. I also shot a panorama at the same time which I will share some time in future.

Hope you enjoy viewing this shot.

Magnetic Hill is a gravity hill located near Leh in Ladakh, India. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference. In reality, the effect is an optical illusion and there is no magnetic disturbance in the area at all. (as taken from Wikipedia)

The illusion works very well even if it not magnetic. We saw persons playing around with their vehicles and at one instance we saw a car being pulled uphill, a very nice illusion to witness and and see.

The location is a Pangong Tso which is a very famous lake and this bike was an integral part of our trip. This is one of the example where I have bumped up the colors, saturation etc.

~ rohit (Out For A While) posted a photo:

My last session attempt for a light painting with car was a little okay, which made me go for another attempt and a much complex one this time. It took us almost an hour to complete this shot. Seemed easy at first but it was indeed some hard work both to capture the shot and then post processing.

The light paintings have indeed made me learn some interesting things including Photoshop :-)

Hope you like it ...

Parked

~ rohit (Out For A While) posted a photo:

Parked somewhere in the middle of nowhere, I felt like clicking this one as soon as I saw it. A wonderful invention used by many, I used a similar bicycle for commuting in my childhood days. I also remember the feeling when I first learnt how to drive a bicycle, my first successful drive made me feel like I was flying, like I am the king of the roads :-) and no other success matched the same feeling again.

Did not feel like posting at first but this subject took me back in time, like no other, so could not stop.

Hope everyone had a great weekend and ready for the week to come.
