A party sparkler recorded in slow motion (1200 frames per second).

This is cross-view stereopair. To view this video in 3D you need to cross your eyes until you see three fuzzy images. Then try and focus the middle image. This takes a lot of patience to get right, but once you've done it once it gets easier. There is an anaglyph version for 3D glasses here.

This is pretty pointless I guess, but it's the hour long display of fireworks at the end of the Edinburgh Festival 2008 (The Bank of Scotland Fireworks Concert) compressed into 85 seconds. There is no audio.

This is a moving long exposure photograph of the fireworks at the end of the Edinburgh Festival 2008 (The Bank of Scotland Fireworks Concert).

I don't have the software to do this properly, but this is sort of what I was after. The video is silent.

This video shows the felling of two Sitka spruce trees in a Scottish plantation forest. Normally, commercial felling is done using harvesting machines, but these trees are being felled for a research project. The trees in this particular forest are about 40-years old and will soon be harvested and the logs sent to a sawmill. The land will then be replanted with new trees to provide timber in the future. Wood grown in this way can be used in place of materials that are not renewable, such as concrete and plastic.

Research helps us understand the factors that affect the properties of wood that are important for us, such as strength and stiffness.

D70 shutter slow-mo 3D

This is the mechanism of a Nikon D70 camera shooting with a 1/125 second exposure. The video was captured at 600 frames per second by two Casio EX-F1 cameras.

The top view is a cross-view image. To view that you need to cross your eyes until you see three fuzzy images. Then try and focus the middle image. This takes a lot of patience to get right, but once you've done it once it gets easier.

If you can't see the cross-view, don't worry. The bottom view is an analgyph image. You need to wear red-cyan glasses to view this in 3D.

This was inspired by this sequence of images of a D3 shutter (a much more complicated mechanism).
