&lt;p&gt;A lantern at the Toshogu shrine in Nikko, Japan (North of Tokyo).  The Toshogu was completed in 1636 during the reign of the 3rd Shogun, Iemitsu.  It is said more than 15,000 people were involved in the construction including many fine craftsmen.  The shine includes both Shinto and Buddhist elements and is highly decorated with painted carvings following Chinese and Korean influences.  &lt;br /&gt;
