I've got loads of editing work to do, so naturally I glued necklace bits to my face and pulled dramaticly vain poses.

Oh! Extra silly justification - I just got a new 35mm lens so obviously it needed testing.

I originally edited the blurry clock out, just to make it simpler... but who needs simple. I like the creepy ghost clock.

I've been getting back into daily photo uploading on my facebook page
choreographed chaos

Solarina~Lucy Nuzum posted a photo:

this was a surprisingly photo-genic splash of water - I had anticipated possibly merging several exposures together to get the best spray of water, but this came out exactly as I'd hoped! And Chloe splashed&posed so perfectly on time,

This was a great little shoot yesterday morning. It was relaxed and fun, just the two of us and several bodies of water - this was a very murky, shallow little pond!

You can see the black&white version that I'm torn between on my facebook page here - www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151401110828228&set...

And if you like my photographs, I update my facebook page with new images, trying to upload daily for a while! So give it a 'like' if you'd like to see more from this shoot, Thanks!

smoke that was supposed to billow

Solarina~Lucy Nuzum posted a photo:

So.... this was just an idea I had right before we set out - I knew there was this shallow lakepond, I knew I had one little smoke pellet in my camera bag, and I drew this idea - www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151395030313228&set... but in my head, the smoke was going to billow upwards and I wanted to catch it in an inverse triangle upwards (like cartoon smoke) so the lines of the ripples would mirror the smoke pattern and it would be almost like a big hourglass shape....

As you can see, that didnt quite happen! But anouska looks amazing, the water is perfect, and lovely BIRDS flew into the shot! So I wanted to share it anyway. Pathetic amount of smoke ... but a few componants that I still love.

Yesterday evening was a good one.

Drove out to Co.Wicklow with Anouska&Ronan. I had taken the train home from my Grannys last week and spotted some interesting fields & lakes beside the tracks. I looked around on Google maps and found a few little driveways/lanes nearby where I thought I saw, and my patient Carl accompanied me to scout it out - and I'm glad he came as it was getting dark and there was noone about, and all this knarly trees were quite spooky,

Anyway, Anouska assured me Friday was going to be a warm one, and since I was plotting throwing her in a lake, I figured a bit of warmth would be good! So yesterday we set off and had just a solidly lovely evening. Anouska & Ronan run a daily fashion blog (www.anouskaproettabrandon.com/) so they were able to shoot different looks around the place, we all took our time, the sky was bright blue, the sun, setting, was still hot and there was no wind at all. It was pretty perfect.

My photographs arent spectacular - I hadnt props or concepts, just wanted to experiment and enjoy myself . So I made a few photographs that I'll be uploading over the next few days,

& I shot some tiny, tiny snippets of video, that are really nice so Ive put them together into the shorted Behind-The-Scenes video you'll have ever seen! *coming soon*

I've recently gotten a smart phone for the first time, it's pretty exciting, and I've really been enjoying using Instagram to photo-blog a bit as I go, so I uploaded some during the shoot yesterday and will keep updating - so follow me if you like, I'm "lucyandnuzum"
Reams

Solarina~Lucy Nuzum posted a photo:

When I was quite little I bought this book at a church sale, purely because it looked good. Walter Scott's Rob Roy, and I told myself I'd surely read it one day.

But I didn't. Instead I carried it around in my bag of miscellaneous items that I want to use in photos for the last few years, and I mentioned it once of twice, that I wanted to take all the pages and cover someone in them, but I just never did it. And during that time, I saw some amazing versions of this simple little idea, like Heather Evans Smith - www.flickr.com/photos/hsmithphotography/5168826199/in/set... (her entire stream is inspiration) or of course Kirsty Mitchells www.flickr.com/photos/kirsty841/4688735163/in/set-7215762... and then just the other day I came across a young Irish photographer who made this www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=372561019474446&set=a... Erica Coburn, who was just impressively creative in everything I saw,

Anyway, with books and book pages being used in countless great ways, I felt there was no point in doing my own take. And I woke up late, and I don't have a tripod, and then... my little sister Eleanor hadnt quite escaped the house yet. And so, she was dragged in. I figured, whats the harm, no idea has to be 100% original and unique, and I promised myself I'd simply DO more, so, I tore out pages and taped them in streams coming out of the little book, I did it quickly but it worked well - it was just keeping it on her head that proved impossible!

This was an idea I probably would have originally done in photoshop, I actually did a floating books photograph when I was in school, www.flickr.com/photos/shutr/565917236/in/photostream/ligh... - 5 years ago, which is mental! So it was fun doing this by hand, also as I ranted in my last upload, I've lost some of my photoshop prowess I think!

Anyway. I wanted to make something this morning, and my sister was angelic in letting me do this with her,

I'll upload some behindthescenes shots to my facebook page which you can find here - www.facebook.com/lucynuzumphotography

Solarina~Lucy Nuzum posted a photo:

I had different intentions for this photograph, but they didnt quite work out.

Its remarkable how you can lose skills without noticing. Nothing like car keys or nice jumpers, Photography skills, Photoshop skills, Creativity - the danger is assuming theyre not lost at all. Feeling sure you've still got them and operating under that assumption.

And yet over the last year, Ive found a few times that Ive gone to complete an image that I once could have made, only to find I made errors or couldnt get the editing right - and it's not entirely false bravado, as these are skills I once had - photos I once could have made... but Ive tried again and this Lucy couldn't get it right.

Luckily of course, since I had them once I know I can find them again quickly, theres no need to be direly negative about it, just have to get off my arse and find them again. By doing and only by doing.

And I think the real reason I lost some of my abilities was the fact I felt so confident in them to begin with! I puffed myself up with tricks I'd learnt & ideas I'd executed well... but then did nought for months, and exercised none of those tricks, all the while spouting to myself that I still had them! Embarrassing really, but good to know.

So, to summarise a ramble, you really are only as good as your last piece of work - just because you once created something good does not mean you're automatically able to do it again today. That's probably quite obvious but I had seemingly forgotten.

Re-learning my tricks, anyway.

So I'm home alone - my family is away for two week and I'm basking in the solitude. Filling the fridge with cheeses and wines, and using the big telly.

I had forseen more basking though. Tonight Ive spent on the laptop, hurriedly replying to emails, making invoices, editing photos, sending contact sheets, I mean for god sake, it's like I'm not a child at all.

This photo was taken the other day though, at the immediate height of left-alone fantasy. Roaming about without a worry, tugging a tripod into the hallway and leaving it there.

I've got myself quite an interesting summer job (now that Im out of college I cant really call it that can I? The concept of summer holidays is no longer mine to have!) I'm teaching photography workshops as part of a summer camp for teenagers. (so any dublin flickr-ers, send your camera-curious kids my way! We're doing lots of fun stuff, no experience necessary, and no we dont do silly introspective photos like this.)

I'm cheating - I've uploaded this photograph before.

I'm sorry, but I felt a sudden need to regale the internet with my current mental state and I needed an image-shaped excuse.

I've reached a finishing line. An endpoint, and a big four-years-in-the-making deadline. Everything has been handed in, it's even been hung & exhibited & it's had a glorious opening night. But I think the genuine heartfelt happiness is only kicking in now. The opening night passed oddly. It simply unfolded and I just felt numb. Behind my ears were the words "OHMYGODTHISISYOURGRADSHOWOPENING", booming but calm. The evening went well, we had hundreds of people, beautiful evening sun, glitchfree installations and the correct abundance of smiles.

But it didnt quite feel real, and it certainly didnt feel joyous from the inside out. There were still nerves, and processing, and thoughts flying around about every aspect of the show.

Not this week though, and not today. I'm exhaling with real, effortless comfort, I'm ticking off ideas&errands&emails casually and Im sipping some cold white wine & 7up. *that* part is finished, and I'm happy.
