Line-Color- Reflection in Burano

oar_square posted a photo:

The island of Burano was probably settled by the Romans, and in the 6th century was occupied by people from Altino, who named it for one of the gates of their former city. Two stories are attributed to how the city obtained its name. One is that it was initially founded by the Buriana family, and another is that the first settlers of Burano came from the small island of Buranello, c. 8 km to the south.
Although the island soon became a thriving settlement, it was administered from Torcello and had none of the privileges of that island or of Murano. It rose in importance only in the 16th century, when women on the island began making lace with needles, being introduced to such a trade via Venetian-ruled Cyprus. When Leonardo da Vinci visited in 1481, he visited the small town of Lefkara and purchased a cloth for the main altar of the Duomo di Milano. The lace was soon exported across Europe, but trade began to decline in the 18th century and the industry did not revive until 1872, when a school of lacemaking was opened. Lacemaking on the island boomed again, but few now make lace in the traditional manner as it is extremely time-consuming and therefore expensive. Today, the streets of Burano are filled with photographers gazing longingly for their next composition. The brightly colored houses and intimate street settings make this colorful town a great place to stroll. Burano, Italy

The Resurrection of the Dead

Torcello, an island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon, is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, established in 639 according to the wishes of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius and the Exarch of Ravenna. An inscription at the site, dating from the cathedral’s founding, is considered the oldest known document in Venetian history. The church was expanded and renovated on several occasions over the centuries, reaching its current size in the 11th century, during the tenure of Bishop Orso Orseolo, son of the Venetian Doge. The cathedral also became home to a series of elaborate Byzantine wall mosaics during the 11th century. These include the Virgin and Child, located in the apse, and the Last Judgment, on the entrance wall. The cathedral’s polychrome marquetry (inlaid work made from small pieces of variously colored wood or other materials) and its ceiling, constructed with exposed wooden tie-beams, are two striking features for which the building is known.

In this detail from the Doomsday, the dead are resuscitated from the land.

Santa Maria and San Donato is one of the oldest churches in the Venetian lagoon. The view from the southwest looking across the canal is the church's best profile. A document of 999 says that refugees from the mainland founded this church in the 7th Century and dedicated it to the Virgin. The church was rededicated when the body of St Donato, the patron saint of Murano, was brought here from Cephalonia in 1125. This date also seems to be when the church was built in its current form, with the work completed in 1141, a date which is recorded on the mosaic floor. The detached Romanesque Campanile is from the 12th century.( www.churchesofvenice.co.uk)

Commissioned for the wedding of Francesco I de’ Medici and Grand Duchess Johanna of Austria in 1565, the Fountain of Neptune was created by Bartolomeo Ammannati and assistants (including Giambologna). It was originally assigned to Bartolommeo Bandinelli (who created the model), but he died before starting work on the Apuan marble. For the face of Neptune, Ammannati used Cosimo I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany (alluding to the dominion of the Florentines over the sea). Neptune is a copy made in the 19th century (the original is in the National Museum). The fountain is located in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy.

The Left-Hand Ambo of the Iconostasis

oar_square posted a photo:

The ambo is a raised stand formerly used for reading the Gospels or the Epistles in early basilicas. Originally, The ambo took the form of a portable lectern. By the 6th century it had evolved into a stationary church furnishing, which reflected the development and codification of the Christian liturgy. By the Byzantine and early Romanesque periods, it had become an essential part of the church plan.By at least the 11th century, double ambos appeared and were normally placed on either side of the choir, with the north ambo used for the reading of the Epistles and the south for the Gospels. Ambos, in richly decorated churches, were often made of marble and sometimes decorated with mosaics or carving. In the 12th century, the ambo was gradually superseded by the pulpit, and it passed out of liturgical use. San Marco has a double ambos which are quite exquisite.

The iconostasis is decorated with sculptures of the twelve apostles, as well as the Virgin and St. John the Baptist at the foot of the central cross. The cross is made of gilded bronze with Christ in embossed silver. The sculptures are the work of Pierpaolo and Jacobello Dalle Masegne, dating from 1394.

I am aware that photography is not allowed inside San Marco, but this was taken without flash.

One of the canal streets in Burano, Italy .Burano is known for its small, brightly-painted houses. The colours of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development. When someone wishes to paint their home, they must send a request to the government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colours permitted for that lot .Burano is situated 7 kilometers from Venice, a short 40 minute trip by Venetian water boats called "vaporetti". It is a delightful island, famous for its lace-making but more so as a place for photographers to compose watery, reflective memories.

This unique jewel is located on the island of Torcello.Torcello is a quiet and sparsely populated island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon. It is considered the oldest continuously populated region of Venice, and once held the largest population of the Republic of Venice. Work began in the early 11th Century on a church to house the remains of St Fosca, the virgin martyr of Ravenna, and those of St Maura, her nurse and partner in martyrdom. Their remains now lay under the altar, after being carried from Libya to Torcello around 1011. The porch was added in the 14th Century and connects to the Santa Maria Assunta Basilica, a monument famous for its Byzantine mosaics. It is a must visit for anyone interested in Greek-Byzantine architecture and art.
