The Shendys

Three generations of the Shendy family meet regularly for the mosque's community dinners, held every few weeks. The Shendys moved to Tallmadge, Ohio from Cairo in 1991. Each summer, they return to Egypt for three months to visit family. Pictured here is Mrs. Shendy and her daughter, Shimaa, with her son, Khalid. Shimaa, 22, is about to graduate from Kent State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

Many Muslim men attend Friday midday prayer, or Dhuhr, at the mosque. During the service the Imam, or spiritual leader, conducts a sermon in both Arabic and English. At the end of the sermon, which lasts about 40 minutes, all attendees pray together.

Hijabs a'plenty

Ayat Shendy, biology major at Kent State University, laughs as she sifts through one of many piles of scarves and hijabs she owns. Shendy, who moved with her family to Tallmadge, Ohio from Cairo in 1991, said she owns dozens - if not hundreds - of hijabs she's collected over the years from trips to Egypt and other Arab countries. Ayat said she also has boxes of extra hijabs throughout her parents' home in Tallmadge where she lives with her parents, sister and brother.

The Mosque

While their parents attend a dinner meeting inside, girls take advantage of a warm March day to play outside the mosque in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The Islamic Society began modestly in 1979 when a group of Muslim students at Kent State University established a small masjid in their apartment on Rhodes Ave. As the local Arab and muslim community grew, the mosque was able to move to its current $2.5 million facility on Steels Corners Road. The facility includes two prayer areas, recreation room, full kitchen and the Faith Islamic Academy, a K-5 school.

Community dinner

Women line up to eat dinner - hummous, salad and shish kufteh - during one of the mosque's annual community dinners, frequented by muslims and non-muslims alike. The dinner costs $5 per person, but those from low-income families are invited to attend at no cost.
