Erin, the totally awesome hostess / owner (I'm not quite sure anymore) of the Moonshine restaurant, my favorite restaurant (by far) in Austin, Texas.

It was really good seeing her again. A shame Oli wasn't there, too :(

Flat Hicks was the Guest of Honor at SXSW this year. Of course, with a sign saying "Flatstock", what else is one to do but take a picture of the guest of honor in front of it?

At last year's SXSW, the reflective tables and coffee cups of the Hampton Inn were a bit of a favorite for us photo-happy geeks. In honor of that, I just had to take a similar shot this year — making the thing a fine tradition indeed.

Will Wright did the Keynote on Tuesday, March 13 at SXSW this year. He spoke about storytelling, linear and non-linear, how some movies would take chronology and deliberately mess it up, how this all mattered for videogames, and so forth.

The last 20 minutes were then spent on a Spore demo, which — as to be expected — was kick-ass. Most interesting to me was the part where he was in his spaceship and started increasing a planet's temperature — in the span of about 2 minutes, it went from Earth-like to something volcanic and desert-like, completely uninhabitable and without any life-forms remaining. He casually said he'd hoped it would teach players the importance of global warming and help them understand it "if they could just see its effects in a few minutes, rather than hundreds of years".

Afterwards, I talked to Will for a bit, asking him two questions. The first was whether he had planned that "global warming lesson" that Spore will offer, or if it was just a side-effect that he found useful. His answer made me respect him all the more: "Oh no, that's the whole reason I made the game in the first place."

The second question was about flying creatures — currently, Spore doesn't offer you wings or any such evolutionary traits. He didn't really give me a straight answer, but in effect, it's not going to be in the first release but they hope it'll come in a later update.
