No, it's not another multilayer Photoshop or Lightroom tweak, it's actually a single scan from slide film shot through good old fashioned graduated filters. Probing the colour contrast between warm & cold.

A girl I met on the roadside returning from a crop field work with her friend. She had the most stunning looks, evocative every time she laid her eyes on me - it felt like a "X-ray machine". Also the unusual colour of her eyes rarely seen among Ethiopian people. She probably could be a stardom supermodel in the western world yet she lives on the edge of starving. Then again everything in life is relative - here she was in her natural setting, internally happy and keeping her dignity. I wished the very best for her future and left only with respect to their ways of life.

The picture doesn't do justice how high the waterfall really was.

Shot against the light and surprisingly good contrast and DR (a heavy Heliopan clear glass 715nm IR filter - I imagine with a cheaper plastic IR filter this would had been a catastrophe shot).

There was a huge difference of exposure on the sky and down the valley, a good 5+ stops. I used the strongest Lee GND 0.9 I had with me in front of IR filter, through in IR-range they almost seem to be clear useless filters but the 0.9 it gave a slight gradient, nowhere near 3-stops though. I imagine it was around 1/2-1-stop difference it made in IR, but enough to pull some more detail from the sky, the mountainside & ricefields below the clouds.

Below the waterfall. I could barely make a picture there since there was so much water in the air. I had to cover the camera under my t-shirt with tripod attached since I was shooting the film with ASA3 sensitivity, climb over wet & slippy big rocks and take out the camera in the last minute to have "waterspotless" picture.

It's exacly the middle deep wet season of Indonesia so the waterflow was at it's maximum - every day there was at least half a day of tropical rain pouring down.

Shot against the light - hence you have to be particulary careful with water drops on the lens - there were many small ones though.

Accidentially my bag also got on the picture lower right corner. The river's valley side was so steep and sippery with very little room to manage around, also I had a hard time placing a tripod and with those wet conditions I just didn't have time to frame "perfect", you can see the steam of water coming in the air towards me and I was completely soaked doing all the shooting below the waterfall - so it's a proper real life picture :)

A fairytale land

Amazing setting - massive waterfalls below and people with farms, terraced ricefields and houses living above.

We trekked below this waterfall system as well. The valley it drops into is way deeper than the picture shows and the trek was very technical and dangerous since many landslides it had suffered during the rainy season currently active - some landslide seen below the pic where brown ground is exposed.

He was working on a landslide seen behind him (it used to be almost a vertical wall of the mountain, now it's many tons of muddy ground and fallen trees). He had the biggest chainsaw I've ever seen - easily over 1.5 meters long blade - probably for cutting the massive rainforest trees.

He was working on the site to restore the water drain system for the local village that was blocked by the landslide.
