In September 2010, Christchurch was shaken by the magnitude 7.1 Darfield earthquake, caused by movement
along faults west of the city on the Canterbury Plains.

The violent magnitude 6.3 earthquake that devastated Christchurch on 22 February 2011 was caused by movement along a fault that lies within about six kilometres of the city centre, along the southern edge of the city killing 185 people. Canterbury TV (CTV) building where 115 people lost their lives 72 students and nine staff of King's Education died when the CTV building collapsed on 22 February 2011. The King's Education School catered to students from Japan, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and Korea.

More than 2000 residential properties have now been demolished in Christchurch's
residential red zone following damaging earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. CERA is on target to
complete 3000 demolitions by the end of September this year out of a total of over 6000 properties
to be demolished.
