NOTE: This anaglyphic image requires red-cyan 3D glasses to work. For those without 3D glasses, you may wish to view the stereogram instead.

I have now decided to start experimenting with 3D photography, and this is my first venture. It definitely makes for interesting photography, and there'll probably be more where this came from. I decided on this location for my first photo because there are enough points of interest to make a 3D photo viable.

Day 44: Alexander Fleming's Lab

It is behind this door, in 1928, that Alexander Fleming was returning from a holiday to find a mould growing on one of his plates. He noticed that the Staphylococci were dying in the area surrounding the mould. What he had discovered was penicillin, widely regarded as one of the most important medical breakthroughs of our time.

I wish I could have taken a photo inside the lab itself, but they had a strict no photography rule. :(

Today's theme was smell, and one of the first things that came to mind wasn't food (surprisingly!!), but it was perfumes and colognes. Here's one of my colognes - it's called "sunshine". I can't really wear it at the moment because it's too summery, and thinking about this just makes me want warmer weather!
Today in university, we had a tropical medicine lab on the subject of entomology. It's such an interesting topic, that I thought I'd share my photos here on Flickr. One of the main things we did today was study mosquitoes. All the photos are mosquitoes of the genus Culex (most probably Culex pipiens, but I can't be 100% sure).

In this photo is the larva of the Culex mosquito. It can be differentiated from other mosquitoes (Anopheles and Aedes) because it has a breathing tube (unlike the Anopheles mosquito) which is long and narrow (unlike the Aedes mosquito, which has a short breathing tube).

In this lab, we had the chance to dissect a mosquito (yes, dissect something that's a couple of millimetres in length!!) This is the head, mouthpiece and antenna of a mosquito. It's a female mosquito (it doesn't have furry antennae) and the mouthpart has been partially separated.

I'm pretty sure everyone will take a few self photos in their 365 career, and it's a good excuse to introduce myself as a new member of ODC1 - Hi everyone!! :D

Not much I can say about this one really - I think the photo says it all. Through all the decomposition and deterioration, new life emerges.

As soon as I saw the theme, I could already see the photo in my head, so I just needed to go out and actually "find" the photo. I went round scrutinising piles of dead leaves (and got the odd stare in the process!!) and eventually found what I wanted. I decided in the end, for artistic reasons, to remove every colour except green - I feel it adds emphasis.

This was conveniently located on the Trefforest campus of university, and I couldn't not take a photo of this guy right here - he's perfect for the theme "faces in places"!

I honestly wish I could explain what the object is here in the description, but I didn't see past the face and failed to take any notice of what it actually was!
