The Brook which starts its course at the little moor of Haldon, runs through Ashcombe, Dawlish Water, Dawlish Town before eventually reaching the sea at Dawlish Town Beach. On its journey through Dawlish it drops over weirs and under bridges, passing through the Manor Gardens and The Lawn. You can observe the town's famous black swans along with many other species of waterfowl and walk around the exotic plants and flowers along the Brook.

There is magic at the end of everyday
You can see it on the horizon of play.
The sun slowly drops down to take a rest,
And then we lay down for the night until the morning crest.
The Heart of Dawlish

Anne J. posted a photo:

Dawlish is a pretty resort, on the south Devon coastline, between the main holiday destination of Torquay and the city of Exeter.

The town itself has a quiet, relaxing feel to it - full of charm and loaded with atmosphere. Dawlish, was once the haunt of such literary giants as Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. Charles Dickens used the town as the birthplace of Nicholas Nickleby.

Architecturally, the town has two main influences, the Victorian and Georgian eras. Dawlish has a fine collection of buildings from both periods, as well as some buildings that date from much earlier, giving this seaside town a special character.

At the heart of the town is the central open space called The Lawn, an attractive public park, with an avenue of mature chestnut trees, stunningly colourful flower beds, accented by exotic cacti, tropical plants and evocative tall palms.

The Lawn is the ideal spot for the family, providing a safe environment for families to play, relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the park. This is the place to find a shady corner, where you can sit and relax in a truly spectacular spot. At night, a myriad of coloured lights running along the length of the water course are switched on, converting the area into a wonderland where you can enjoy a romantic evening stroll.

.The center piece of The Lawn, is 'Dawlish Water' or 'The Brook'. This river runs through the the gardens, providing that extra special finishing touch to this splendid location. As you walk along the edges of the Brook, you can watch the large numbers of trout feeding in the river, as it gently flows towards the sea, cascading over a series of small waterfalls.

The Brook is the home to a great variety of ducks, swans and rare wildfowl. Black swans, swim gracefully along the river, gently guiding their cygnets as they navigate the river, and feed from the small weirs which interrupt the water's flow. You can view hatchlings in the specially constructed pens on the edge of the park. The whole area has a special feel to it, refreshing and tranquil.

A peculiarity of the town are the mainline trains which run along the edge of the main beach and the Railway station, which is a fine period piece - an attraction in its own right.

A bit of History:
In 1830, Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed a railway, which operated on a pneumatic principle using a 15-inch iron tube. One of the pumping stations was in this town. The line ran right along the sea-front of the town, but Brunel ensured that the line was carried across the mouth of the stream on a small granite viaduct, leaving access to the beach.The atmospheric railway opened on 30 May 1846 and ran between Exeter St. Davids and Newton Abbot. The first passenger train ran in September 1847, but the project was besieged with problems mainly with the leather sealing valve, which after 12 months use needed replacing at a cost of £25,000. South Devon Railway directors abandoned the project in favour of conventional trains: the last atmospheric train ran in September 1848.

@ Happy to be back with you my friends... Colin and I had a lovely relaxing holiday in Dawlish Warren, Devon, UK. Weather started off brilliant ! then quickly took a downhill turn - then perked up again on the last day, just to tease ;-)))

All my pictures are based in Dawlish Warren or Dawlish. We did visit Torquay, Paignton, Exeter, Teignmouth and Newton Abbott but the weather prevented the appearance of my very disgusted camera :-(

TESTING !
Feel as if I`ve got a job as a midwife in a maternity ward, checking to see if all the parts are there ..and in working order !! So far, not so good. Have spent the last few hours complaining about my `justified` layout (not being allowed to change it). Now it won`t even show up !!! Two little dots appear and go round in circles :-(

Recently I discovered `Fluidr`, the app associated with explore. Very useful and streamlined commenting and viewing: However we should not have to rely on 3rd party apps,so I am delighted at the similarity in the new system introduced provides.

Is it just me or does anyone else find this main page claustrophobic ?? I`m sort of wondering if we`re all going to find each other and mingle in the same way. Looking upwards I`m seeing a great stretch of BLACK.

Reading the forum I was dismayed at how many are unhappy about the changes, most are downright angry. . are flickr bosses going to address this I wonder: will there be anyone left on the site if they don`t... Will anyone be able to afford to be here ? Pro account cost to double - or face a mountain of dancing adverts.

Hey, all this and I`m one of the ones giving it the thumbs up !!!... I`m all for progress, but I have a niggly little feeling the `powers that be` might have got it a teeny bit wrong in assuming us flickerites would be happy to just `put up and shut up`.

Anyway, welcome my friends, you`ve found me !! will go and pop the kettle on and we`ll have a brew. Might have changed back again by the time we`ve supped up !!!
Doing a bit of decorating, then holiday to Devon - will be back here full time mid-June xxx

Pink rose-petals
Fluttering down in hosts,
I know what you mean
Sometimes, in Spring.
It is love you mean.

Love has a gray bird
That flutters down;
A dove that comes flying
Saying the same thing.

How happy it makes me to think of it,
Rose-petals . . . the gray dove . . .

Million bells waving bright bonnets of blue
Flaunting tall ranks of incredible hue.
Groundbreaking columns of stalks fill the shade
Assailing our senses from every dull glade.

Mid dapple-dim woods we tred without sound
Breathtaking armies of blue all around.
Sun shedding Spring over cold woodland dew,
Highlighting patches of mystical blue.
Sheer seas of colour all billowing there
Dance to perfection their Show of the Year.

After all the rain, the sun
Shines on hill and grassy mead;
Fly into the garden, child,
You are very glad indeed.

For the days have been so dull,
Oh, so special dark and drear,
That you told me, "Mr. Sun
Has forgotten we live here."

Dew upon the lily lawn,
Dew upon the garden beds;
Daintly from all the leaves
Pop the little primrose heads.

And the violets in the copse
With their parasols of green
Take a little peek at you;
They're the bluest you have seen.

On the lilac tree a bird
Singing first a little not,
Then a burst of happy song
Bubbles in his lifted throat.

O the sun, the comfy sun!
This the song that you must sing,
"Thank you for the birds, the flowers,
Thank you, sun, for everything."

Thy name is heard in crowds-
They call thee good and great;
The brightness of the sunset clouds
Seem showered upon they fate.
Where’er thy pathway leads
They strew it o’er with flowers-
Emblems of generous deeds
Thy heart profusely showers;
Oh, good and great forever be-
Worthy thy praise they yield to thee!

Thy name is heard in crowds-
They call thee good and great;
The brightness of the sunset clouds
Seem showered upon they fate.
Where’er thy pathway leads
They strew it o’er with flowers-
Emblems of generous deeds
Thy heart profusely showers;
Oh, good and great forever be-
Worthy thy praise they yield to thee!

I am a kind word uttered and repeated
By the voice of Nature;
I am a star fallen from the
Blue tent upon the green carpet.
I am the daughter of the elements
With whom Winter conceived;
To whom Spring gave birth; I was
Reared in the lap of Summer and I
Slept in the bed of Autumn.

At dawn I unite with the breeze
To announce the coming of light;
At eventide I join the birds
In bidding the light farewell.

The plains are decorated with
My beautiful colors, and the air
Is scented with my fragrance.

As I embrace Slumber the eyes of
Night watch over me, and as I
Awaken I stare at the sun, which is
The only eye of the day.

I drink dew for wine, and hearken to
The voices of the birds, and dance
To the rhythmic swaying of the grass.

I am the lover's gift; I am the wedding wreath;
I am the memory of a moment of happiness;
I am the last gift of the living to the dead;
I am a part of joy and a part of sorrow.

But I look up high to see only the light,
And never look down to see my shadow.
This is wisdom which man must learn.
TO THE LAKE ~ {explored}

Anne J. posted a photo:

In Spring of youth it was my lot
To haunt of the wide world a spot
The which I could not love the less -
So lovely was the loneliness
Of a wild lake, with black rock bound,
And the tall pines that towered around.

But when the night had thrown her pall
Upon that spot, as upon all,
And the mystic wind went by
Murmuring in melody -
Then - ah, then, I would awake
To the terror of the lone lake.

Yet that terror was not fright,
But a tremulous delight -
A feeling not the jewelled mine
Could teach or bribe me to define -
Nor Love - although the love were thine.

Death was in that poisonous wave,
And in its gulf a fitting grave
For him who thence could solace bring
To his lone imagining -
Whose solitary soul could make
An Eden of that dim lake.

Flower of the mountain! by the wanderer's hand
Robbed of thy beauty's short-lived sunny day;
Didst thou but blow to gem the stranger's way,
And bloom, to wither in the stranger's land!
Hueless and scentless as thou art,
How much that stirs the memory,
How much, much more, that thrills the heart,
Thou faded thing, yet lives in thee!

Where is thy beauty? in the grassy blade,
There lives more fragrance and more freshness now;
Yet oh! not all the flowers that bloom and fade,
Are half so dear to memory's eye as thou.
The dew that on the mountain lies,
The breeze that o'er the mountain sighs,
Thy parent stem will nurse and nourish;
But thou—not e'en those sunny eyes
As bright, as blue, as thine own skies,
Thou faded thing! can make thee flourish.
Over the chained bay waters Liberty--
Then, with inviolate curve, forsake our eyes
As apparitional as sails that cross
Some page of figures to be filed away;
--Till elevators drop us from our day . . .

I think of cinemas, panoramic sleights
With multitudes bent toward some flashing scene
Never disclosed, but hastened to again,
Foretold to other eyes on the same screen;

And Thee, across the harbor, silver-paced
As though the sun took step of thee, yet left
Some motion ever unspent in thy stride,--
Implicitly thy freedom staying thee!

Out of some subway scuttle, cell or loft
A bedlamite speeds to thy parapets,
Tilting there momently, shrill shirt ballooning,
A jest falls from the speechless caravan.

Down Wall, from girder into street noon leaks,
A rip-tooth of the sky's acetylene;
All afternoon the cloud-flown derricks turn . . .
Thy cables breathe the North Atlantic still.

And obscure as that heaven of the Jews,
Thy guerdon . . . Accolade thou dost bestow
Of anonymity time cannot raise:
Vibrant reprieve and pardon thou dost show.

O harp and altar, of the fury fused,
(How could mere toil align thy choiring strings!)
Terrific threshold of the prophet's pledge,
Prayer of pariah, and the lover's cry,--

Again the traffic lights that skim thy swift
Unfractioned idiom, immaculate sigh of stars,
Beading thy path--condense eternity:
And we have seen night lifted in thine arms.

Under thy shadow by the piers I waited;
Only in darkness is thy shadow clear.
The City's fiery parcels all undone,
Already snow submerges an iron year . . .

O Sleepless as the river under thee,
Vaulting the sea, the prairies' dreaming sod,
Unto us lowliest sometime sweep, descend
And of the curveship lend a myth to God.
by Henry Van Dyke

Let me but live my life from year to year,
With forward face and unreluctant soul;
Not hurrying to, nor turning from the goal;
Not mourning for the things that disappear
In the dim past, nor holding back in fear
From what the future veils; but with a whole
And happy heart, that pays its toll
To Youth and Age, and travels on with cheer.

So let the way wind up the hill or down,
O'er rough or smooth, the journey will be joy:
Still seeking what I sought when but a boy,
New friendship, high adventure, and a crown,
My heart will keep the courage of the quest,
And hope the road's last turn will be the best.

I count each day a little life,
With birth and death complete;
I cloister it from care and strife
And keep it sane and sweet.

With eager eyes I greet the morn,
Exultant as a boy,
Knowing that I am newly born
To wonder and to joy.

And when the sunset splendours wane
And ripe for rest am I,
Knowing that I will live again,
Exultantly I die.

O that all Life were but a Day
Sunny and sweet and sane!
And that at Even I might say:
"I sleep to wake again."
Manhattan, NYC (taken from Empire State Building) December 2011

# #
The Empire State Building
is a 102-story skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It has a roof height of 1,250 feet (381 meters), and with its antenna spire included, it stands a total of 1,454 ft (443.2 m) high.[6] Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. It stood as the world's tallest building for 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, the Empire State Building was again the tallest building in New York (although it was no longer the tallest in the US or the world). The Empire State Building was once again demoted to second-tallest building in New York on April 30, 2012, when the new One World Trade Center reached a greater height. The Empire State Building is currently the third-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States (after the Willis Tower and Trump International Hotel and Tower, both in Chicago), and the 22nd-tallest in the world (the tallest now is Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai). It is also the fourth-tallest freestanding structure in the Americas.

As dawn swept 'way the morning stars
A gloomy Helen glared
Poor Paris stood in silence-- watched--
He’d kiss her if he dared.

The sea was raging round their heads
The men rowed without cease
The lovers headed to their doom--
A myth is birthed in Greece

Ten thousand ships launch in pursuit
Rough soldiers flex their knees--
Today hunt thieves tomorrow queens--
Men do what kings will please

The soldiers puked and gambled hard
Twas boredom that they feared
A seasick trip was just a jaunt--
The Trojan shore appeared

The glory grew beyond Troy’s walls
The truth no one can trust….
Dark tragedy writ in the books--
Tis flung among the dust.

........Poem by Victoria Anderson-Throop
