Space is a lot closer than you think. Every step you take there are billions of cosmic interactions occuring, many of them within your reach if only you could see them. A veritable cosmic zoo of particle annihilation and creation.

So why then, does it feel so good to walk out in the sunshine, climb a lovely mountain and feel the snow crunch up under the toes of your boots? Probably because we are all just human after all.

This is Jeannie - my wonderful wife who joins me in these adventures - heading onwards and upwards, just before we had to get the ice axes out :)

By the way, apologies to peeps I haven't visited in a while. Life has been manic busy and I mean that most seriously folks, with barely a time to chase a rainbow. A sense of normality may return soon.

Black sail by moonlight

I don't know why exactly but whenever I think of Black Sail I have an image of the Dawn Treader popping into my head. This was probably reinforced by a large painting of a black sailed viking vessel inside the hostel itself.

The most remote in England, it's a good 6 mile walk up the valley (as we arrived late) or a pleasant romp across the fells from Seathwaite or Buttermere for those with an earlier arrival.

A colleague at work had said it was a 3 mile walk so we wondered, after an hour or so with big packs on at 9 o'clock Friday night, why there was no sign of anything. He'd neglected to mention they parked at the other hostel a third of the way along the valley - generally it's a no go area for cars.

This was an 80 second exposure with a bit of headtorch painting to burn in the foreground. A great place, worth every one of its one star, and a superb base to start a walk around the head of Ennerdale in the early morning.

Feet in the clouds

We did a great walk on Saturday around the Ennerdale Fells with snow thick on the tops. Unfortunately I discovered, with my usual complacency the night before we set off, that my crampons did not fit my new boots. Still, we avoided the icy bits by sticking to the deep snow and there was plenty of it.

This was a view from near the summit of Green Gable - Jeannie was treading up with her ice axe out and I had my trusty D700 in my hands, fearful of missing the next instant when the clouds cleared. It was a magical journey for sure.

We stayed at the most remote Youth Hostel in England with a group of friends and had the pace to ourselves. A great weekend:)

I'd forgotten how far away the tip of Pembrokeshire was - we seemed to have driven all day long to get back and to top it all we saw the sun for the third time this week :) The ice cream skies I'd been promised never materialised and the greyness seemed so unfair. I quite like stormy and overcast conditions but on the proviso that the sun will pop out for a minute or two to illuminate the land between bouts of hiding away, but this week it just stayed hidden. Good job we had a warm dry place to retreat to, good food and good company to help keep ourselves amused :)

Sometimes it's just great to get away and escape the technological age around us. Other times, like right now, I'm loving it. Sitting in an ocean front bar in Pembrokeshire with my mac and a pint of guiness and of course ... Jeannie, or zenith 4.5:)

Who cares that the weather is grey or grim, it's a right larf.

Another one from the Rialto in Melbourne. The tall building on the left centre is teh Crown Hotel, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had the top floor apparently while we were. It seemed pretty plush inside, certainly out of our budget :)

It's getting pretty manic here right now. I've just discovered imovie and am hurriedly catching up on processing so I can play with a few slideshows. I've about had enough now - sort in Lightroom, open in NX2, dust spotting and contrast adjustments and just done around 60 images. I believe there may be a glass of chilled wine waiting for me with my name on it:)

We're in celebrating mode tonight :) Just sold the exclusive rights for one of our images for a year and suddenly it makes all those hours of painful dust spotting and keywording worth it. Now, if we could just do one of those a month ...;) (unlikely but we can only dream).

Well this is two of them anyway, and of course there's only eight since four of them collapsed. And this week another one went so there's only seven left :)

These were from a few days spent on the Great Ocean Road, a smashing road trip along the southern coast of Victoria. Great way to spend a few days:)
