I went on a photowalk last night with a local group of photographers. It was a beautiful evening, and a good group of people. This is the walkway over Jefferson Avenue that connects the Renaissance Center to the Millender Center.

This is what Detroit might have looked like if John Portman (the principal architect for the Renaissance Center) had been a big fan of 2nd empire architecture. I think it would be awesome.

It's not often that you find this part of the Renaissance Center almost completely empty. For those wondering; No, I did not edit the people out.

This is the view toward Canada from the upper level of the rear atrium. I think adding this was the best change GM made when they purchased the building.

Yesterday was "Wild in the Streets" in Detroit, where 1000+ skateboarders met at Hart Plaza, skated and performed tricks for a while, then skated across Detroit, literally taking over a good stretch of Woodward for a while. They eventually made their way back to the Brewster Projects where a skate park has been erected.

It was an interesting morning. I generally refer to taking pictures as "going shooting". This morning it took on another meaning. Minutes after taking this image, a truck pulled into this park, and two guys who appeared drunk, drove across the grass and parked by the water. They were making a lot of noise, urinating out in the open, then one of them pulled out a gun and started shooting at some birds, the water, and in the air.

We were taking pictures at the park. They were shooting at the park.

We left quickly.

After Dennis Maitland's artist reception at Phog in Windsor last night, Bethany, Pam and I made our way to the waterfront for some VERY COLD picture taking.

We felt like we had to do this, since the customs agent who questioned us when we were crossing the border told us "It is ILLEGAL to take pictures in Canada". Seriously. She said that.

Pam, the kids, and I went to Windsor the other evening for the sunset. My sense of direction was off, because it set on the Windsor side of the river... So we took pictures of Detroit without the sunset.

This long exposure picture using ND filters turned out to be one of my favorite of the evening because of the similarity of color between the Detroit River and the sky.

It gets windy in Detroit, too!

When Dennis and I went to Windsor a couple of weeks ago, we were stopped while entering the country because we told the border agent that we were going to take pictures... Of Detroit's skyline. She simply could not fathom why we would want to do that. On our immigration card, for the reason for entering the country, she wrote, "Taking pictures of the skyline?" I wish I could make the question mark bigger. In fact, I wish we had taken a picture of the immigration card. They finally let us in, and we... took pictures of the skyline... and a few other things.

It was a pretty great day.

Until I walked the riverfront the other day, I never really thought of modern Detroit as having or being a port.
