When Ray let me use his fisheye lens at Farwell, I had a blast. It was fun to use, and created some pretty cool distortions.

This is a close-up of the rail on the top floor, purposefully allowing the rail across the atrium and the rail on the next floor down to be seen.

Another with Ray's fisheye lens. I took it up as high as I could to get this. The streaks are from the snow that was steadily falling through the absent roof. The lovely lady to the right? My wife.

I had my tripod fully extended, was holding onto the feet, and stuck it as high up in the skylight opening as I could reach.

Well, it looks as though the renovation plans for the Farwell include tearing out all of the old wrought iron railings, dumping them into a broken heap on the floor at the bottom of the well.

That's Dennis standing where the railings used to be. What a shame. Seems to be more destruction than anything so far.

Some of you know by now that it was graffiti that first brought me to Detroit with my camera. Then, when I saw the images painted on the inside of the windows of some of the abandoned buildings, it was the grasshoppers that really caught my eye.

I had tried to shoot this grasshopper at Farwell a couple of times in the past, but it was last week, with a few more months of experience under my belt, that brought me the image I wanted.

This is an HDR processed image made from twelve bracketed shots and a lot of hands on adjustment to get the exposure right throughout the image.

I'm happy now. It may not be the most beautiful picture in the world (I know it isn't), but it is a marked success for me. I finally got my grasshopper.

Tiffany glass - Farwell

In the lobby of the Farwell building, Tiffany glass was used to decorate the ceiling. A lot of it is still in place, and as you can see, it still looks beautiful.

Somewhere during the cropping process in Photoshop, I lost the EXIF data for this.

I shot this in full auto to take advantage of my camera's built-in flash. The lobby is pretty close to pitch black. There is just a little bit of light coming in around the plywood that blocks the main entrance.

I was intrigued by all of the safes in the Farwell building. Some were walk-in wall safes, one was on wheels, and this one was on a platform.

I checked them all carefully, and found nothing of value that was left behind. Dang.

This is the original shot I took for the Hellavator (previous picture in my photostream). A lot of you have an enormous amount of experience with post processing, and I am interested in getting some feedback/guidance. If you don't mind, please compare it to the previous image and offer critiques/advice based on what I did in my processing of this image. Thanks. Mike

Why are most of us so f**king serious? I thought we were having fun!

I had a blast exploring this wonderful building with some serious photographers. There have been a few "Explores" from the day (none of mine), and I'm sure there will be more.

I was glad to be a part of it.

I hope some of the others post their versions of the group shot. The better lenses and processing skills will be cool to see.

My first attempt at bracketing three shots and merging them together. I'm not sure if I really achieved HDR or not, but it was an interesting experience.

The Farwell Building in Detroit (abandoned) has a most magnificent and ornate entryway.

I stitched nine images together to make the one shown here. Since the entry is about 16 feet tall, there is some distortion as a result of my skewing to square it up.

This building is absolutely amazing. The details within are stunning.
