Hong Kong after a storm front had cleared off towards the West. To me what is really interesting about this image was that there were about 5 other photographers at this location with me and not ONE of them was taking shots of this. They had all come up there to shoot sunset and were oblivious to, what was for me, amazing lighting conditions at the time and were instead yelling at each other in Cantonese. One of them had a nice medium format Hasselblad setup and didn't roll off a single frame. To me the MOST important thing about photography is observing the world around you otherwise you miss opportunities when they arise. In the blink of an eye this light had dissipated never to return.

In the modern metropolis that is Hong Kong the stars are rarely visible due to atmospheric pollution from Asia's "brown haze" - a cocktail of airborne particles and pollutants that obscure the night skies above. In this Megacity space is at a premium and the feeling of confinement is exaggerated by using the extreme distortion of the fisheye and shooting at ground level looking upwards.

Lake Eyre in the remote outback of South Australia is the complete antithesis - a vast and desolate ocean of endless horizons, spanning the worlds largest drainage basin and covering an area about the size of France, Germany and Italy combined. A place where silence courts solitude and the perfect vantage point for observing the southern hemispheres bountiful skies.

Two extremes of environment unified in a single frame.

Digital was used to shoot the cityscape and the long exposure advantages of film were utilised for the star trail exposure of approximately an hours duration. To create this composite image the two exposures were then combined using software. I rarely alter my images from the original shot other than contrast/sharpness enhancements or multiple exposure blending such as adding a correctly exposed moon but the curves of the buildings and the lines from the star trails just seem to complement each other perfectly in this image.

Waterfall in Annhui province in the Huangshan mountain region of China. I decided to do an HDR version of this shot as I felt it needed something to bring the colours to life a bit.

Hong Kong CBD at dusk - multiple exposure. I have combined the moon in the exact place where it was positioned in the sky, albeit smaller and overexposed in the original frames taken with the fisheye lens. The moon was shot on a separate frame with the Nikkor 28-105 mm @ 105mm and combined afterwards but this is essentially a real shot.
