"'News to you, pal, but old stuff to me", says Jiggs IV. 'I thought everybody knew that General Holcomb, Marine Corps Commandant, had '1775' on his license plates - and that's the year the Marine Corps was founded!' Jiggs sniffs his disdain at those who didn't know this association of dates, as he visits the Commandant's car at headquarters of the Corps in Washington, D.C. Fourth of his famous line of bulldog mascots, Jiggs is official Leatherneck sergeant (honorary) at Quantico, Va base."

"Pet, pride and mascot of a Marine battalion on Parris Island (S.C.) is "Gismo", baby raccoon, shown here in a family pose with his foster-mother, Nippy, and kit-sister "Gizfoo". A marine drill instructor found the motherless Gismo in the boondocks while his platoon was practicing extended order drill. The mother cat took to the coon as soon as he was put with her, so the three of them live happily together in an orange crate in a battalion mess hall. The mother shows no favoritism at meal time. Corporal Roy Manns, USMC, of Lansing, Mich., arranged the adoption."

William H. T. Swisher served with the Third Amphibious Corps as a combat photographer overseas during World War II at Guam, Okinawa, and China. This photograph was taken in Guam, 1944. Here Swisher is shown receiving the Bronze Star medal from General Rockey.

Swisher and a fellow Marine play with "Combat". Note the Purple Heart attached to "Combat's" box. Interestingly Swisher did not suffer any wounds during his wartime service. It is believed that the Purple Heart award was actually a gag award to his photographic unit’s pet cat obtained in China. The cat was appropriately enough nicknamed “Combat”.
