<p>SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Maj. Gen. Kevin Leonard, commanding general, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, congratulates Sgt. Charles Shaffer on his promotion. The general promoted Shaffer to the rank of sergeant, E-5, during a ceremony here Feb. 7, 2012. More than three years ago, on Sept. 1, 2008, Shaffer was seriously injured when the vehicle he was driving was attacked in Mosul, Iraq. Shaffer and two other Soldiers inside the vehicle were hit by multiple grenades. In addition to massive injuries to his right leg, Shaffer sustained shrapnel injuries to his left leg and burns to his face, hands and lungs. Shaffer lost most of his right leg from the attack, and all but four inches of the leg was amputated later because of infection. After more than two years of recovery at Walter Reed Medical Center, Shaffer realized his goal of remaining in the U.S. Army. He now works at Hq.
