Ski lift chairs fell into a crevasse when the snow suddenly opened up into a large crevasse injuring at least seven people. At this time is has been ascertained that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. It is estimated that another 300 skiiers remaining on the lift were stranded over night as rescuers desperately tried to reach them without falling into the crevasse themselves.

After the first day's investigation, the causes of the crevasse gaping open were still unknown. Weather in the area has been below normal after an unseasonably warm spell. First speculations are the changes which occured in the groundwater table, freezing and thawing the ground, followed by extremes in rainfall and snowfall and the ensuing drastically cold drop in the weather. Geologists are also investigating the possiblity of an underground salt cavern which collapsed suddenly.

However crevasse accidents particularly ones involving actual ski runs or ski lifts are extremely rare.

"It is an anomaly of nature," says Tony Kingsley, a spokesman for the National Geological Association (NGA). "Our long term research shows its far more likely to have a Martian landing than a crevasse opening up."

The NGA doesn’t keep records of crevasse phenomena – like this one – that don’t involve fatalities, as they’re exceedingly rare.

At Big Rock Candy Mountain, this is the first time a crevasse has appeared.

All the remaining ski lift passengers were successfully evacuated from the lift by the following morning, and the NGA was studying the phenomenon to figure out what happened.

"Big Rock Candy Mountain is absolutely committed to the safety of its ski trails and ski runs. Our beautiful little ski resort is in jeopardy. We may have to open a suspension bridge for tourists to view the newly formed ice crystal displays and forego any chance at all of continuing the ski resort operations. "
