From the get go I was really thrilled with this project sponsored by the New Greenmount West Community Association (NGWCA). There is something special bout putting work in the neighborhood that you are a part of. Although this experience ended in a positive way, this wall turned out to be a lot heavier than I anticipated. While painting Sunday night these 4 kids rolled up on me and put a gun to my throat. Its kinda crazy that in all my experiences putting up work. I have never been robbed before or even been in a situation that seemed threatening. From the moment it happened everybody around was very aiding. These hard-knocks up the block immediately helped me and rode around on their bikes to tell everyone else on the streets to get inside while these kids were walking around. It was really heartwarming how the community responded. While painting the next day people brought me meals and drinks and let me know how supportive they were that I was still painting. People really wanted to make sure that this type of thing action did not speak for the residents of the community - a very close knit progressive community that has made leaps in the past few years.

You probably have seen the red sign with the x that is just as prevalent around the city on vacants as the beloved "we buy houses" signs. If you don't know what it means it has been put there by city because the property has gotten so decrepit due to a lack of upkeep that it is structurally unsound. Its there to let the fire department know that if it the building catches on fire not to enter to fight the fire for it is not worth it and dangerous. This block in particular is covered in Red X houses and those houses are right next to homes where families live. There wouldn't be this sign or this problem if the city and slumlords actually made an effort to deal with their problematic properties. Its the law and it also happens to be what is right.
