Buttercups in a meadow near home. At this time of year the fields hereabouts are strewn with these lovely flowers and on a warm spring afternoon it is one of life's simple pleasures to lie down in the long grass and luxuriate in their sunny yellowness.

When we were kids the thing to do was to pick a buttercup and hold it under a friend's chin and if their skin reflected the colour of the flower that meant they liked butter.

A Sparrow Hawk with the remains of prey.

I came into the kitchen to make some tea first thing on Sunday morning and opened the window blinds to see a Sparrow Hawk tearing at the carcass of a Collared Dove. The dove had evidently been tucking into some bread I'd put out the night before when the hawk pounced. I felt a bit guilty that I'd inadvertantly caused its demise, but that's nature for you!

The hawk stayed put for 15 or 20 mins until nothing was left but feathers.

(This is not the shot I'd hoped it would be. In my haste I grabbed my 70-300mm but didn't notice I had the camera set to an insane aperture and I thought the lack of light was due to it being a very gloomy morning so I bumped up the ISO setting with the resultant noise.)

Clevedon Pier at dusk.

Nipped up to Bristol yesterday afternoon and there was a beautiful sunset over the Bristol Channel as we headed home on the M5 so a stop-off at Clevedon seemed in order.

I didn't have my Siggy 10-20mm with me but the tripod was in the back of the car so had to make do with a few shots on the shingle down by the pier using an all-purpose 18-200mm.

It was a lovely evening though.

The Ford Capri was launched in 1969 and I remember being taken by my parents to a local Ford dealership to look at the car. Not that my Dad had any intention of buying one of course.........

To a 10 year-old this car was motoring excitement personified. The fact that it was basically a boring old Cortina underneath that sexy exterior was lost on me.

This example is at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.
