A reflection of American Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) in the swimming pond at Distant Hill. This shot was taken over a week ago, on Dec. 4. The pond is now frozen over and any new reflection images will have to wait until spring.

A reflection of American Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) in our pond. It is a common shrub, native to northern New England, that supplies loads of berries for holiday decorations.

River Otter Water Color

I was taking a Sunday morning walk to get the newspaper and luckily had my camera with me. Two otters were swimming in the pond on March Hill Road, just east of our driveway.

I had to use a high ISO for these shots due to the dim early morning light (and my slow lens). That added an unexpected hand painted effect to the images. I went back an hour later, when the light was better, but they were gone.

The biggest of New Hampshire's weasels is the River Otter, at 25 to 40 inches long. These stately creatures of the water are dark chocolate brown in color. Otters may roam as much as nine square miles. As with mink, fish and crayfish make up the majority of their diet. Like other weasels, otters are rarely seen, despite their abundance.
