New Horizons - Clarens, Free State, South Africa

I want to take a moment to thank all of you who take the time to visit my account here on flickr. I appreciate all the support and without you, I literally would not have had the opportunity to go to South Africa last month.

You see, one of the vice presidents of the Photographic Society of South Africa, Johann van der Walt, originally invited a photographer from the UK. Unfortunately, the guy in the UK shot Canon, and Nikon wasn't exactly keen on sponsoring a photographer who doesn't even use their equipment. As luck would have it, Johann went home and flipped through his (then) new issue of American Photo...the Nov/Dec 2009 issue to be exact. That issue featured me and two other flickr photographers. I got an email from Johann shortly after, inviting me to come to South Africa. So you see, flickr helped me expand my horizons and go on a wonderful trip and gain new experiences.

Flickr is you. It is me. It is all of us. And it is social. But like all things social, there are up sides and down sides. I think it's important to focus on the positive aspects. So thank you once again. And you never know, your opportunity could be next! Keep shooting!

Back in June Kendra and I made a quick road trip through Oregon and up to Seattle. It certainly was not a proper photography trip. We needed to make constant progress along the way and only had two days in Oregon. The first was spent in Bandon, the second at Pacific City.

We did get to see a lot of the popular spots along the way such as Seal Rocks, Cape Perpetua, and Heceta Head Lighthouse. We did miss out on a few other spots, but now that we have a taste, a return trip is certain.

Despite how calm it was on the south side of Cape Kiwanda, we were impressed with the wave action once we arrived at this commonly shot vantage point. During the big sets, waves would explode as high as the tops of these sandstone bluffs. Impressive for such a 'calm' day.

I have some long exposures from here which I may post down the road...or tomorrow! I've been on a run of pulling images from the recent past to post up. Hope you don't mind.
The Absent Spectrum - Vatu-i-Ra Channel, Fiji
Sorting through my Fiji images, I came across some shots of fields of leather corals. I certainly enjoyed photographing them and would position myself low and close to the reef to fill the frame with this one species. I felt it simplified a busy scene to focus on one animal.

But with the tropical blue water and subdued golden color of the corals, it was difficult to resist keeping the image in color. For me, monochrome converisions often are a result of lack of killer color. Here that was not the case. A little voice inside my head said "try black and white". Call it experience, call it schizophrenia. Either way, here is an alternate view of Fiji's tropical reefs.
Coral Sunshine - Mount Mutiny, Fiji
I recently spent some more time browsing my images of Fiji and quickly edited about 10-12 images over the last day or so. Check out my new Fiji gallery for more if you like. Give it a moment to load up and all should be fine.

This image caught my eye for its simplicity and for the fact that those corals just seem to be soaking up that sunshine...which they are. Hard corals have a symbiosis with small algae. The zooxanthallae produce food for the coral through photosynthesis while the coral provides nutrients and a place to live. It's all really simple. :)

Here is an image from last December when about all I recall is driving north and getting hammered by a thick marine layer and eventually driving all the way back to Natural Bridges as it was still in the clear.

The color only came out a solid 15-20 minutes after sunset, so a blue hour long exposure seemed appropriate.

Happy Wednesday everyone and hope you are all doing well.

Here is another shot from my brief visit to Joshua Tree back in December. For this image, I used a white LED flashlight to light paint the rocks and took a few steps back from my previous composition. The moon had climbed higher in the sky and I used my fisheye's extreme wide field of view to include it in the scene.

This was my first serious light painting attempt and over all, I'm happy with the results, but will definitely hope to improve my next time out.

I decided to upload this image as I will have a similar one featured in an upcoming issue of National Geographic. Keep an eye out!
Cape Kiwanda Dawn - Pacific City, Oregon

Portfolio & Services

The second day of our trip to Seattle last week, we stopped into Pacific City to spend an evening and morning at Cape Kiwanda. And a stop here would not be complete without a visit to the Pelican Pub. Yum!

After lunch and setting up camp, Kendra and I scouted around the sandstone bluffs. As we headed back to camp, I mentioned how the rocky shelves to the south were a popular sunrise location with one reason being that you don't have to climb a steep hill at 5am.

And that is exactly what we did the next morning. Sleepy eyed and dragging our feet from lack of sleep, we shot the sunrise on the south side of the bluffs. This late in the year, the sun rises too far north to illuminate the bluffs directly when the best color is in the sky, so I definitely will want to revisit here (and spend more than 18 hours) in the fall or winter. There are a couple camp sites nearby and a well stocked market, so Pacific City is far from "roughing it", but hey, I'm ok with that. I love a good IPA at the end of the day!

2100 miles.
5 days.

That was our whirlwind trip in a nutshell as Kendra and I drove up through Oregon and Washington to attend the 2010 ICP Awards in Seattle. This photo contest is held every other year by Art Wolfe and focuses on the power of photography to help conservation.

Along the way, we stopped for sunset and sunrise in Bandon along the southern Oregon coast. We scouted a few locations on our way to Pacific City and Cape Kiwanda before getting to our friend little m's house just north of Seattle on Friday.

The Burke Museum in Seattle kicked off the three month showing of the winning images with bang. Wine, artisan sandwiches (yum), and an amazing display of photography were on hand. Meeting Art Wolfe was a highlight as was the after party organized by Jon Cornforth. Sean Bagshaw and David Cobb were in attendance, two members of Photo Cascadia, as were Kah Kit Yoong and Todd Mintz. Seattle's own, Dene Miles and Aaron Reed, also joined in on the fun.

Here is an image from our first stop in Bandon. The striking sea stacks located here has always called to me, and although the sunset was devoid of color, I was still happy just to experience them. I tried to emphasis their shapes with silhouettes by waiting for the sun to get low enough in the sky to create better contrast. I look forward to my next trip here and hopefully I'll have more time, more days, and more images to share.

It's been a month since my last post and my time on flickr has been minimal since my return from Fiji. A combination of a sick kitty and preparing for the art show season has kept me away. I am preparing for a work related trip to South Africa in October which will be devouring my time as well.

I just wanted to let you all know I am alive and well and thank you to those who have emailed me to make sure I hadn't fallen off the planet.

I am doing a whirlwind trip to Seattle next week as Kendra and I were both winners in Art Wolfe's ICP Awards Photo Contest. I will be hitting some spots in Oregon and Washington, so hopefully I will get to meet a couple PNW shooters along the way.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Portfolio & Services

First off, thank you all for the kind words on my last post, I appreciate it immensely.

Second, as I know some of you may be wondering, my ear did great on the trip. I did take a pharmacy with me, but only the nasal spray was hard core. Mostly, I took vitamins, ear supplements, homeopathic sinus and ear medicine and used Doc's Pro Plugs brand ear plugs for added insurance against potential ear trauma. It all seemed to work, and in the 6.5 days of diving I:

1) did 21 dives
2) spent 20 hours 40 minutes underwater
3) breathed 1680 cubic feet of compressed air

It is beyond words to be back underwater again. Diving is such a wonderful, surreal experience and to be back in that space brings me much happiness.

Ok, now a little about the trip and the shot.

Fiji is known as the soft coral capital of the world, and I love soft corals. I am drawn to them, almost to a fault.

You see, the entire trip I sought out sections of reef with individual and small patches of soft coral. I passed up many excellent macro opportunities for that "quintessential" Fijian soft coral vista. Little did I know, the last day of the trip offered the best soft coral reefs.

Underwater photography presents its own unique set of challenges, too many to list here. But one of them is finding dynamic compositions while attempting to balance the natural light along with your strobes and having nature cooperate all at the same time. What I mean to say is, I have a ton of so-so images with many suffering from uneven lighting, lackluster compositions, and chaotic fish formations. A lot of elements aligned for this one, and that is why I'm posting it first, as I feel it could be my best from the trip.

I hope you enjoy the image and that it may inspire you to appreciate the beauty and bountiful life in our oceans. Life that is worth protecting and preserving for future generations to explore and enjoy.
I haven't been out much shooting, a combination of factors causing this sad state. That should hopefully be changing soon, as I have some more free time in the near future.
Misty Morning - Tunnel View, Yosemite National Park, California

Portfolio & Services

I've had some people asking me about my recent trip to Yosemite. To be honest, I am not totally thrilled with the images I got of the "classic" views. Maybe it is because they have been shot so much and so many amazing images already exist of these locations.

I have some more abstract shots that I am happy with. Generally, some of my favorite images are ones that I can process extremely quickly. This means that the light, contrast, and color was excellent at the time and I did a good job of capturing it in camera. Minor color, contrast adjustments are added and some selective sharpening are all that is needed.

This image had a huge amount of dynamic range. The mist really reduced the contrast as well. While it was an amazing spectacle to witness, getting an image I was happy with proved difficult.

In the end, this is a blend of three exposures using Photomatix's Exposure Fusion tool. I probably could have used my best single exposure, but the highlights were just too blown in the upper right and bracketing seemed necessary to get all that range captured.

I really liked the light beaming across the valley and illuminating the mist falling across El Capitan on the left, but that may be it. I'd love to hear people's honest critiques, so blast away!

Our last day in Death Valley over the holidays was spent at the famous Zabriskie Point. The clouds were nowhere to be seen, so I used my telephoto lens to isolated the oft photographed peak.

One of my contacts, davidkeine, was nice enough to give me some last minute travel tips before we embarked on our journey. One of them was to get to Zabriskie Point early to stake out a spot. I thought it odd, as I rarely encounter other photographers in my normal day to day shooting.

Kendra and I got up at "super early" per usual, and we were the first people in the Zabriskie Point parking lot. Heading up to the overlook, I thought to myself "it won't be that crowded". Ha! About five minutes later, a car pulls up. Then another. And another. Soon the overlook and the bluff below were filled with dozens of photographers.

I had snuck away off to the right of the overlook, securing my own little patch of dirt and enjoyed the sunrise in the (relative) solitude of the desert.

Vamos a la Playa - The Racetrack, Death Valley National Park, California

Portfolio & Services

Here's another shot from my recent trip to Death Valley. Before that epic sunrise at Badwater, Kendra and I had an amazing light show on New Year's Eve at the Racetrack.

The Racetrack is an old lake bed, a playa, long since dried up. The road here is, well, it's interesting. So much has been said about the road to the Racetrack. "You need 4WD", "you need high clearance". Well, not really. If you have plenty of time, you could make the drive in a Yugo. The washboard sections sucked, but if you watch your speed and don't drive like an idiot, you should be fine. Speaking of idiots, I couldn't believe how many people were tempting fate driving much faster than their beat up 1989 sedan should be going on such a road. Whoever you were, I hope you made it out ok.

The ranger at the visitor center said we'd have no problem in my truck and he kindly asked us not to walk on the playa if it had recently rained. Footprints last for years, and we did see a few trails made by humans once we got there. Bad tourists! Speaking of bad tourists...well, let's just say it was a trend. I've got plenty of "bad tourist" stories for anyone who's interested.

We spent our afternoon walking from the south end up to the Grandstand, a large dark rock formation. It seemes so close, but damn if that playa didn't seem to go on forever. We made our way back towards the south end for sunset. I found an area with two different rock/trail patterns I liked and settled in for quite the light shot.

Not a bad way to end 2009!

Portfolio & Services

Here's one more from Rodeo beach a couple weeks ago, and most likely my last shot for 2009. Thank you all for a wonderful year and I wish each and every one of you a safe and happy holiday season and a grand new year! I will be in Southern California for a few days and then hopefully to Death Valley. Any of you who have tips, secret (or well known) spots in either area, let me know! I'll be checking my flickr mail.

Onto the shot.

Sometimes I forget to mix things up when the light is sweet, instead getting caught up in the moment, in awe of what is unfolding before my eyes. Coastal shooting, in the action zone, requires great attention to all those 'little' details. Which shutter speed to use to get the best water action to retain details is one of them. Dealing with mist and water all over your grad filters is one of the most annoying things. It never ends! And, oh, not gettting totally wiped out by a rogue wave. Yeah, that's important, too.

Now, I'm about to let you in on a personality trait of mine. I don't multitask well...at all. I will forget where I'm driving, and miss turns, just by having a conversation. I misplace an item, whether it be keys, wallet, or phone, on a daily basis.

So as we are wrapping up this shoot, I suddenly realize I've misplaced my filter holder. I had just taken it off and it's nowhere to be found. I check all eight of my pockets, four in my jacket, four in my pants.

Nothing.

I conclude that the filter holder fell to the sand and was either swept out to sea or covered in sand by an incoming wave. Steve loans me his flashlight and I start looking. In the meantime, I am getting flustered. I just lost my $70 remote in Tahoe a couple weeks ago, I do not want to lose a $70 filter holder. I hastily set my tripod further up the beach and continue my search. But my tripod falls over and my camera hits the sand. Sand is now wedged into every button and dial on the back of my camera. Nice.

But I find nothing. I give up and we head to the parking lot. I sit down in my truck and instantly realize what a fool I am. I NEVER put anything in the back pocket of pants! But there it was, my filter holder.
One more image from my Lake Tahoe trip over Thanksgiving. By the final sunset, the clouds had all gone away, and there was still a lot of wind on the lake. Yeah, I love it when conditions suck.

Well, since the Gold-N-Blue polarizer was pretty much glued to my camera on this trip, I figured I'd show an image where the polarizer's effects are pretty obvious. I got blue water and a gold sky.

I'll give that little polarizer credit, it can make something out of nothing when it comes to colors. The palette on this one is obviously "out there". Let me know what you think.

Portfolio & Services

I get this email from Patrick Smith. "Yo, Jim, the storm could break at sunset. Get your butt up to San Francisco."

I look out my window and it's raining. I think "Yeah, right! Drive for almost two hours for this?!?!"

But it's Patrick Smith, landscaper extraordinaire, so I give it some more thought. What the heck, I'm heading to San Francisco!

As I'm leaving town, I call Steve Landeros, aka maxxsmart. I shot with him on Thursday, and his cell number was sitting at the top of my phone. "Yo, Steve, the storm could break at sunset. Patrick Smith says so."

Steve replies "Yeah, right!"

I convince him otherwise, and we meet above Marshall's Beach, south of the Golden Gate bridge. It's now 4pm and sunset is less than an hour away. Golden beams of light are breaking through the clouds off shore. My photographic juices are flowin' big time. I'm thinking, "Let's go!" Steve is casually discussing the options in detail, showing me sunset angles, azimuths, latitudes, longitudes on his fancy iPhone.

I point to the golden sunbeams, and say "those look good". Steve agrees, and off to Rodeo Beach north of the Golden Gate we go.

We hustle out to the beach, I rip off my shoes and socks, going full "toes to the sand" style. We set up, just as the sun is dipping below one cloud bank to the next. Three minutes into the shoot, I get this shot. Truly, living in the moment.

Met up with maxxsmart and MattGranz the other night to shoot a vantage point, that while once was unique, certainly is being shot with a tad more frequency. Still, it was my first time there and the view was gorgeous.

The overcast sky, and occasional sprinkles, didn't dampen my spirit, but it did dampen my camera gear. I would love to have shot this on an evening with a more interesting sky, but hey, you can't have it all, al the time. I'll just have to try it again some time.

Thanks guys for the fun night out!

The snow started falling during sunset the night before. We knew sunrise may be tricky depending on how much snow had fallen. We also knew that fresh snow would give us a totally different landscape than we had bene shooting the last day and a half.

The day before we got to Emerald Bay way too early and waited for the sun to rise. As much as I wanted to adjust our sleep schedule to sleep in, I knew the fresh snow would slow us down. Yeah, it slowed us down.

Ice on the truck and windshield meant using a credit card to scrape it off while blasting the heater and defrost on full blast. Down the road, we knew chains were required. Luckily there was a gas station with covered pumps to put the chains on with clean, dry ground.

This pano was almost an afterthought. The best skies had moved through the area and we walked back up to the parking lot. Heading out to the vista point, I thought, "hey this is a nice vista!". Coincidence?

The slate gray sky pretty much meant a slate gray lake, but I whipped out the Gold-N-Blue polarizer and was impressed at how it just made the lake sing when rotated the right way.
After photographing the surfers at Steamer Lane, we proceeded to head up to Bean Hollow, a cool little beach and rocky coastline just south of Pescadero. The winds were howling, and we laughed like little kids as the wind pushed us around to the point where you felt like it could knock you over. We explored the cove, north and south, and found a myriad of possibilities. Amazing rock formations, but rugged as all hell. Our footprints on the beach were erased by the wind within minutes. Did I mention it was windy?

After some trash clean up and getting hit by 30 foot high spray from a rogue wave, we retreated back down Highway 1 and settled in on the bluffs overlooking Big Basin and Año Nuevo State Parks. On the drive up, I spotted a little pull out with some nicely colored ice plant to add a little foreground warmth to the sweeping vista.
