The rock formations in Arches National Park create stunning landscapes in any season. Here, in winter, a fresh snowfall contrasts with the red rock of the Organ in the Courthouse Towers area.

I didn't see too much in the way of good light on my winter travels through Utah, but I still made the best of it by scouting and finding interesting places to photograph in non-golden hours of the day.
While conducting a photography workshop in Death Valley National Park, the group witnessed a spectacular display of warm, golden light on a variety of wonderful cloud formations. While conducting a photography workshop in Death Valley National Park, the group witnessed a spectacular display of warm, golden light on a variety of wonderful cloud formations. A small rainbow formed over the Panamint Mountains in the background as the marbled geological formations of Zabriskie Point anchor this desert landscape image.
Caption: The Racetrack playa and its moving rocks phenomenon draws travelers and photographers from all over the world. On a clear, moonless night, the mily way aligns with one of the trails left behind by the strange and unusual moving rocks.

About the image: While driving up to the Racetrack in Death Valley, a 27 mile gravel road with washboards a-plenty and many recent wash outs, I had the audacity to ask myself "is it worth it?". I had been there before, but the road was a fair bit worse this time through. When I arrived, there were half a dozen rental jeeps with a horde of about 20 photographers. From a distance, I could see that some of the playa's moving rocks, the main reason for subjecting myself and my vehicle to the drive, each had several people / tripods hovering around them.

I almost turned around and left.

I waited in my truck. And to my surprise, they all started leaving before sunset. I hurried out and photographed sunset. And by nightfall, I had the playa to myself. Under a moonless sky, the silence was deafening. Love it!
It's been awhile since my last post. Life, in all its forms, has distracted me from posting here on flickr yet again. Alas, here is a recent image from the sunset Friday night.

I was in a hurry, so I used a 3.5+ year old composition to start with before trying a new one a few frames later (I'll post that in a few days).

The D800E was at home, so I used my backup, the D800. 16mm, 0.6 sec, f16, ISO 100 and a Singh-Ray 3-stop reverse GND to finish it off.

Taught a sold out workshop the next day, but the fog decided to return and squash any chance of a repeat performance.

Coyote Buttes North is part of the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness and is home to magnificent sandstone formations, patterns, swirls, and lines.

While beating the summer heat along a shady wall, some clouds rolled in to fill the sky in the upper part of the frame. A perfect time to make this image.

With the unforgiving detail of the Nikon D800E's sensor, I have been trying a different approach for certain images. This is a blend of four exposures. Three for depth of field at different focus points and a fourth for dynamic range on the sky.
I had some fun using a circular fisheye lens while in Lower Antelope Canyon outside of Page, Arizona, and idea I got from seeing the (in)famous Mike Jones' image from Secret Canyon. I tried a few compositions, and this one stood out from the rest once back home.
While photographing the desert landscapes of northern Arizona, I made a stop into Lower Antelope Canyon which is located outside of Page, Arizona on Navajo Nation land. After securing my commercial photography permit and a photographer's pass, I descended into the underground slot canyon to experience the beauty of these carved, sandstone walls. The sun light was amazing, and at the end of my stay, light beams from above shone down through an opening in the canyon.
The coastal landscapes of Santa Cruz, California are filled with amazing rock formations such as this natural arch at Natural Bridges State Beach. Early fall is the best time for sunsets as the angle of light illuminates the face of the arch.

I'll be teaching a workshop in Santa Cruz this Saturday with fellow photographer Joshua Cripps. What kind of weekend plans do you all have? Let's hear them!

This image was made by intentional camera movement (ICM) of aspens in the eastern Sierras along Bishop Creek, California. The sun was out, so I used a Singh-Ray Vari-ND on my 70-200mm. This allowed me a slwoer shutter speed in order to pan the camera and lens down during the exposure.

Sea to Summit Workshop swill be heading here in October. Please visit my profile for more information if you are interested. And have a great weekend everyone!
