Water Towers

Every once in a while, I look up and notice the rooftop water towers in New York City and I remember how strange and ancient they look. For a week, I'll notice them every where. Then I will forget them entirely.

They are pretty odd. I'm fairly New York is the only city that has them, at least in such widespread numbers. And they look so old because they practically are: they have been made pretty much the same way and out of the same type of wood for hundred of years. Built in a manner similar to barrels, they leak initially until the planks expand with moisture, sealing the tank fast. And now you know.

A pack of African wild dogs stares off into the distance of a diorama in the Hall of African Mammals in the American Museum of Natural History.

I haven't been in years but, for the most part, the museum remains unchanged. I live in fear of the day they tear out the big wooden displays, the dusty models, the dioramas and the ancient lightbox signs in order to modernize the place.

The way I see it, my admission was a bribe: thirty bucks to look the other way and ensure they never renovate.

Wide as the Horizon

This is not, by far, my best photograph. However, to a degree, the Very Long Year is about trying new things and, courtesy of my lovely new wide angle lens bought from Mr. Pantozzi, I have shot my first wide digital photo. And what might actually be my first wide photo, period.

I'm so used to the macro lens, using the wide actually gives me a bit of the vertigo.

Everywhere I go, there's always someone, somewhere, making a funny face at me...

Just for the record, this isn't technically a gargoyle, as it is not masking a water spout. It is actually an ornamental keystone that, judging by the face's leafy features, is meant to portray the Green Man, a pre-Roman fertility symbol.

Look at that. Not only does the Long Year wow you every day with pretty photographs, but it educates you on obscure topics you probably didn't care about to begin with. It's like Sesame Street for weirdos.

The natural history museum in Chicago displays the bodies of the pair of man-eating lions known as the Ghost and the Darkness. At some point, I'll get to see them. Till then, this fellow will have to do.

Of course, the little scrap of paper I used to note down the names of everything I was shooting has vanished into oblivion. These are long horned antelope looking mammal things in a diorama in the Hall of African Mammals in the American Museum of Natural History. How's that for a nebulous caption?
