By photographer's standards, I was pretty lazy at Lake Powell! It was all I could do to get up by 7:00 a.m. to catch a shot of the still water in Moki Canyon before, like clockwork, a ski boat went by to churn things up. Sure enough, 30 seconds after this shot an early morning group of water skiers went by and the glassy water was gone!

It was an irresistible sunset at Lake Powell. We were eating dinner on the houseboat but the lasagna would have to wait! I grabbed my camera and tripod, jumped the anchor rope, and found a great rock for a foreground object.

It was a wonderful sunrise over the calm waters of the main channel of Lake Powell near Halls Crossing marina. If I felt any grogginess it soon left as the color and rays of morning appeared!

Morning Ski Trip

One of my favorite activities at Lake Powell is the early morning ski run! My wife, daughters and their husbands enjoy the smooth water in the main channel. This shot was taken as a bracketed set but there was just enough movement to make blending or hdr very difficult especially with the ski tower. I finally gave up and used a single RAW image trying to balance the bright ski and the foreground exposure.

Each morning at Lake Powell (after the early waterskiing run) I enjoyed walking around the sandstone formations near our campsite. I was amazed at the endless variety of formations and geography in this red rock country!

Smore Time

I always have a tough time with fire shots. This time I used 6400 ISO and f2.8 to shorten the exposure enough to get a reasonable shutter speed (1/8 sec.). I was pleased with this shot to get enough light on the background houseboat and not blow out the people.
