Bridge to a Happy Trail

This is a bridge going over the (empty) raingarden pond at Londontown Historic Gardens in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Rain Gardens are a method of helping deal with erosion and specifically the washing of toxic chemicals into the water supply. They sort of act as living sandbags to collect and soak up runoff rainwater that may be carrying undesireables into the South River, and thus the Chesapeake Bay.

Here is another of my beautiful beautiful bearded iris! It's the beautiful deep purple color and slight variations in hue and the sharp veining that makes this particular one so special. I don't remember which one it is, but I bought it at Tanglewood Garden Center in Clinton, MD a few years back, so it's whatever kind they had then. I have many iris plants in the yard. Actually, they line the property on two sides of the front yard and there is an additional two locations where I have them planted. Here is one of my fancy iris- I believe it is an "Earl of Essex"- blooming. It's going to be a watercolor painting later on in the season when it's too hot to garden and so I have to take my love of plants indoors. Here is a lovely bearded iris hybrid. . . technically, they are known now as German Bearded Iris, but there seems to be some sort of rival claim to this plant from the Italians. From what I gather from ancient sources, it was the Iris that put the "Flor" in "Florence" (or the "fior" in "Fiorenza", as they used to spell it.) In fact, it was one of the state symbols of the Florentine Republic during the medieval era. But, somehow, this flower got hijacked by their northern neighbors- maybe because they were the first ones to write it down after the formal latin classification of plants began. Who knows? All I know is, they're beautiful. "Redskins" Iris

"Redskins" Iris, is, of course, not the actual botanical name of this flower, but it's a kind that my family has grown for generations- and over the course of those generations, living in the Washington, D.C. area, they've also all been 'Skins fans. So, they called this particular bearded iris after their favorite team, due to its coloration. If anyone out there KNOWS the actual name of this particular hybrid or cultivar, please don't tell me.
