Moeraki Boulders

-----------------------------------------------

The Moeraki Boulders are unusually large and spherical boulders lying on a beach between Moeraki and Hampden, on the Otago coast of New Zealand. They range from 0.5 to 2 m in diameter and were formed by concretion on the ocean floor some 60 millions years ago.

According to Maori legend, the origin of the boulders dates from the loss of the Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe. On its quest south for the precious greenstone, the canoe was wrecked near Shag Point. The reef which today extends seawards is the canoe's petrified hull, while close by, in the shape of a prominent rock, stands the petrified body of her commander. The boulders are said to be the fishing nets and calabashes that were washed ashore and then turned into stone.

Sunrise over Milford Sound, Fiordland, New Zealand.

Ape Lunatic posted a photo:

-----------------------------------------------

It took a while but I've finally managed to upload a new photo. This was taken mid-december in New Zealand, where I spend a few months since early November, travelling, learning to take my time and to be more down to earth, and meeting people by volunteering in farms. It's hard to keep my Flickr stream updated since the internet access is quite limited here and I don't really find or take the time to do it, days are running so fast and there are plenty of other things to do better than staying in front of a laptop.

Anyway...

Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Māori) is a fjord in the remote and wild southwestern part of New Zealand's South Island. It runs 15 km inland from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by mountains rising up to 1700 m at Mitre Peak (the lightened triangle shaped peak on the photo). The 7,000 mm average annual rainfall makes it one of the wettest place in the world. Rainfall can reach 250 mm a day, which creates dozens of temporary waterfalls, some reaching hundreds meters, cascading down the cliff faces into the sound. Then the peaceful landscape can quickly turn into a fury, and the waterfalls may never reach the bottom of the sound, drifting away in the wind.
The road to Milford Sound itself is worth the trip : 100 km through the Southern Alps, within primary rainforest, between thousand meters cliffs covered with waterfalls, through dark old one-way tunnel. It's closed during the night and after heavy rain so, as the weather is quite unpredictable, people can sometimes remain stuck there for some days...

Capturing the sunrise at Milford Sound was probably my favorite photo session ever. Alone (with my beloved assistant) in the sound, surrounded by 1,000+ meters cliffs, with only the sound of the wind, the birds, the small waves and a waterfall behind, facing the fjord and just looking at the peaks turing red. It all gave a hardly describable sense of wonder, respect and scale in front of this serene but powerful landscape.

----------------------------------------------

The Padangtegal Wenara Wana, moslty known as the Ubud Sacred Monkey Forest, is a temple complex and home of hundreds of monkeys. Monkeys spend their time wrangling between clans, running and jumping in all directions, breaking coconuts and trying to steal everything they can to tourists. It's really enjoyable to spend time watching them and the place has something mystical with the Balinese temples hidden in the jungle, so the forest has now become a main attraction in Ubud.
Gullfoss, Iceland

Ape Lunatic posted a photo:

Gullfoss (the golden falls) is a waterfall located on the river Hvítá. It plunges abruptly in two stages into a 32 meters deep crevice. The average amount of water running over the waterfall is 140 m³/s in the summertime and 80 m³/s in the wintertime. The highest flood measured was 2000 m³/s.

During the first half of the 20th century, there was much speculation about using Gullfoss to generate electricity. During this period, the waterfall was rented indirectly to foreign investors by its owners, Tómas Tómasson and Halldór Halldórsson. A story goes that Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the Tómas Tómasson's daughter, was determined to preserve the waterfall and threatened to throw herself into the waterfall. It was later sold to the state of Iceland and is now protected.

This is the second stage of Gullfoss. Taking a long exposure shot at the edge of the cliffs was a bit difficult due to the wind constantly spraying water on my lens.
