Sometimes when SF gets too overcast in the summer, I head south to find the edge of clouds. We had some interesting ones a few weeks ago, they looked like post-storm clouds even though it hadn't rained. I was trying some long exposures of the fishing pier at Sierra Point when these caught my attention.

The sun and sky in this long exposure came out a bit of a mess, but I like how the gauziness works with the sharp shadows of the rocks.

If you look at this large, you might be able to see an unattended tripod and a hunched over photographer just right of bottom center. Rodeo Beach.

Somebody else's sky came to the Bay Area today and gave us an inch of rain. In the month of June. Hawk Hill, Marin Headlands.

These clouds were headed northwest, which is unusual.

Later that night. On nights when I do mostly long exposures of fog, I prefer the few quick, high iso ones I take. This time I did mostly quick, high iso exposures, and it's the long exposures that I like.

Two weekends ago, SF was completely blanketed in "high" marine fog. It takes away the sunset and reduces visibility, and it makes me not want to shoot. I knew the peninsula was enjoying sunny skies, so I headed down 101 to get out of the fog. The edge of the fog flowing over the hills was nicely defined, and I wound up here on the mosquito-infested slope of San Bruno Mountain. I took mostly closeup shots of fog going over the ridge that didn't come out. I think with this fog, where you cannot get above it, needs something to play with.

Shot along with mrperry after finding out the Carnelian Room wasn't open until dinner on new year's eve (we weren't the only ones caught by surprise). See his series here: www.flickr.com/photos/mrperry/4237872350/. HDR plus stack of light trails. I accidentally shot this in jpeg, and the processing involved was a reminder of how much faster and better working in raw is. I've been shooting off and on the last few weeks, but haven't gotten anything particulary interesting, I hope this is just a short slump and not a wall of some kind. Washington St at Jones St, I think.

SFO rush hour on Friday, December 18th, 2009, at 10pm.

Yet another angle on the same daily event. Qantas 74 headed for Sydney can be seen taxiing across the runways from left to right. The dark jet at front left is a Delta plane -- for some reason it sat there for quite a while as planes taxied by on the far side, and then finally took off. Also, not shown here, one plane got in position to take off on 1R, moseyed up to the intersection at 28L (or jumped the gun), waited for a plane to land on 28L, and then followed the landing plane back to the gates.

There were lots of trails on the ground even though most planes did not have their tails illuminated. The trails in the air seemed to suffer from this viewpoint, and it was overcast at first, so some trails ended shortly after takeoff. A bit of a rush job on the postprocessing, I can clean this up some more if desired. I'm still trying to find something in these shots, but I may have to incorporate the actual city of San Francisco in them somehow.

SFO (II)

Late night departures from SFO on runways 1L/1R on Saturday, December 5th, 2009. The blurry strip just above the ground are flights United 863 and Qantas 74, both Boeing 747-400s headed for Sydney, as they taxied to 28R.

A big minus tide had drained most of the water out of the wetlands, so I didn't get as many reflections as I'd hoped for. Also there was bad weather on the East Coast, and perhaps also because it was a Saturday, traffic was a little lighter than usual.

Lastly, there were (construction?) trucks running around on the closest taxiways, never stopping in one place for long. Two of the trucks were carrying crazy bright lights on flatbeds -- took a long time to get rid the glare and lens flare from them.

I almost trashed this shot. I had miscalculated and overly long exposed this quite a bit. Then I noticed when working with it that the colors had distorted into something more interesting. This is facing east, the water reflected the pink sky for maybe five minutes. Pier 64.

Last Sunday evening, I was near Rodeo Beach. The skies were clear with some high cloud streaks, and a "one third" moon overhead. So I figured I'd take a quick look. The tide was low, and the stacks were kind of bare, not that interesting -- time to experiment.

EF-S 10-22 @ 10mm, f/3.5, 360s, ISO 200. A bit of flashlight painting from the left side because the stacks were backlit and came out black otherwise. Blend of three conversions of the same raw file.

Try large on black?

I mentioned to smfr123 that I was looking for a new location for shooting water, and did he deliver. This is near Stevens Creek Reservoir, and there were countless spots like this one that were a lot of fun to shoot -- using long exposures, naturally. EF-S 17-55 @ 28mm, f/10, 30s, ND400 and polarizer. Saratoga, CA.

- The red streak is just a plane.
- There are four meteor trails on the left side. Easier to see at 1600px.
- The two in lower left appear to line up even though they occurred minutes apart.
- The haze around the trails is an artifact of having to brighten them.
- 11 eleven stacked exposures over 22 minutes (hit and run).
- I think 30 second exposures would have cut the ambient light down, but I was being lazy.
- Taken in Land's End, somewhere up the hill from Sutro Baths.
- Who knew you could see meteors within city limits?
- This was the night after the peak (same night as "plan b"), much less foggy.

Last Wednesday I saw some interesting clouds just before sunset. I grabbed my camera bag and found a good sunset spot at Aquatic Park. Planted my tripod in the sand, opened the bag. Lenses, but no SLR body -- I'd left it behind at home. Mourned the lost shot, hurried back for the body, and then out again to find any shot as blue hour wound down. Potrero Hill.
