Shot with my incredibly trusty 10-22 that I love so very much. One hour trail straight out the camera and StarStaX. No editing done aside from subracting a couple frames with planes.

Went out in nearly freezing weather for this one. Good friends and a couple cigars to keep us warm. It's nice to be home.

Canon EOS 7D | 50mm | f1.8 | 1/8000 | ISO100

It's funny how far something small can take you. Something small like an entry level DSLR and one photography class.

I never really thought I'd have any true future with photography. I thought that my journey with photography would slowly come to end after my high school career. I thought after leaving my home in Phoenix, Arizona and coming to a university in Los Angeles, I would stop taking pictures all together. Boy, was I wrong.

Just to fun, I applied for an internship to the university photographer. I went into the interview not knowing what to expect but came out achieving my dream. Because of a silly hobby, I now have a paid internship taking pictures; my dream. I'm doing something I love, and getting paid for it.

I guess I'm that guy who is going to tell you about not giving up and following your dream, no matter how ridiculous it seems. Because I suppose it's true.

To everyone (you know who you are), thanks.

P.S. This shot was taken during my first photo gig. Thought it was appropriate.

Reservation Lake, Arizona.

About 250 images taken over the course of two hours. Taken with my Canon Rebel T1i and stacked using StarStax. Each exposure was about 30 seconds long, at f3/5 and tried to experiment a little at ISO1600. First time really shooting at that high of an ISO. The lake is a little grainy but the stars turned out real well in my opinion. I like those one a lot; probably my favorite trial to date.

This is what a two day camping trip in the middle of nowhere gets you.

Two hour long trail at an abandoned greyhound race track. Also a two hour round trip, making about five hours total spent for this guy.

Stacked using StarStax, 250 frames of planes edited out (poorly) using Photoshop. Not too much fun there. But still worth it.

I usually don't do shots as complex as this guy, but still, I thought I would give it a little go. Turned out alright. Even better after some pretty serious cropping, but other than that, this is all one exposure. 429 seconds of running around, spinning stuff, and breaking stuff, but will worth this shot. Again, nothing is added or taken again here. Aside from converting from RAW to JPEG, this is right out of the canon. SOOC. Although it didn't turn out exactly as planned, I am still very proud of this one. Definitely have somethings to work on and build off of thought. That's in the future though.
A trip to the bat cave sparked this shot. One exposure of the P7 on the circular tunnel's walls and then one exposure of my silhouette in the central bat cave and came out with this shot. Ran it through Photoshop a little but didn't really turn out the best. Oh well. Not the best night in the world but it's always nice when shots turn out a lot better than you expect.
Another try at the lens cap trick and another trip to the concrete graveyard. This was our first go at the double exposures, so we didn't really know what we were doing exactly. Girlfriend locked the shutter, I jumped up, flashed the wall, put on lens cap, spun a two second orb, lens cap back on, moved the camera to a different tripod, re-focused, gelled P7 on the circuit board for 15 seconds on one side. SOOC. Not even cropped. Almost pee'd myself when I first saw this just because I didn't think I could do it. Definitely don't doubt yourself.
Took a stab at the lens cap trick this week, since I've never really gotten a chance to try it out on the field. Didn't think it could be so fun! I love 'em. Motivation and some tips from Mr. LED Eddie.

Modelling my friends new clothing company "I Am Parental Guidance", my girlfriend and I went back out to the concrete graveyard for a little shooting. I set up two tripods, one facing the stand and the other facing downward toward the circuit board. Started off facing the stand, my girlfriend spun the V24 and then popped a flash right at me. Put on the lens cap, re-focused, then took the camera off the first tripod, and proceeded to the second tripod, where I lit the curcuit board with my P7 for about 30 seconds, and TA-DA!

Nothing at all added, subtracted, or layered. Just a quick run through Photoshop for basic adjustments, tiny bit of straightening, and then posted!

Week 11/52 (1st post)

53 images stacked @ 20 seconds each

Third shot from the other night. Took a little trip to fountain hills. Had to use a skimboard to cover the lens from incoming mist.

Quick fact: This fountain is the 4th largest fountain in the world. No big deal or anything.

No strobist for this guy. Oh well.

Second shot from Tuesday night, my favorite of the three. Taken a little bit past Bush Hwy right off the 87 east of Fountain Hills for what it's worth. Again, trying something a little different with this one. Didn't run each individual shot through Lightroom because it seems like my laptop is getting slower and slower by the day so... I tried to make this as easy as possible. Just ran the final stacked image through Lightroom and Photoshop once and then posted. I like this one a lot though. But still a little too grainy for my taste.
Quick little 15 minutes stack here on my way from a pretty excited night. Phoenix weather has been beyond perfect for star trails, and I'm just loving it.

I believe this is my first posted star trail that is completely unedited. Usually, I run each photo through Lightroom, stacked 'em, run it through Photoshop, and then post it... but this time it was right out of the camera, then stacked, and then posted. Nothing to it.
Using my newly discovered setting on my Canon G12, I decided to take a little trip one day to different locations around Phoenix and do some tilf-shifting (if that's a word...) I also finally ended up getting Lightroom 4 so I was able to edit the videos a little through that.
What a perfect night to be out and about Phoenix. Not a single cloud in the sky. The moon wasn't out, and it just seem calmer than usual.

Not really too much to say about this one. In Scottsdale, Arizona there's this long row of giant metal horses like this one, and I figured to deserved a little recognition.

The light pollution was pretty great, but luckily, I bought a couple poster boards again to carefully shield the lens from any and all light that might cross its path. I messed around with location and settings for about 30 minutes and starting shooting. Total time was a little less than an hour. I used my 55-85mm on this one.

Post Processing: Imported and exported through Lightroom, stacked in StarStax, tweaked a little in Photoshop, uploaded to Flickr. Simple as that.

200 images stacked together @ 15 seconds each

Really quite the story on this one. Too much trial and error, the police, and poster boards just to name a few weird things this night.

To give a quick summary and some highlights of the night, I set up on the top of a Sky Harbor Airport parking garage and tried a couple different locations for trail. The glare was beyond belief so I set up a couple poster boards all around the camera to block the extra light pollution. This was for about an hour.

As far as post processing goes, I ran all the shots through Lightroom, exported them, Photoshopped a couple of planes out, used StarStax, and then added a little watermark. That's about it.
One last thing: If you haven't already noticed, I like to write a lot on these Flickr descriptions, and honestly, it's not because I need to, but because I want to. And so, not to take up an incredible amount of space for Flickr descriptions, I've decided to make a little blog. It's basically a behind the scenes type thing. You obviously don't have to read it, but if you want to learn more about how I did something, or what went on during a certain night, this blog is the place to go. Here's the link: (my first post is about this shot actually)

Bake A Pie, Watch The Sunset

"Watch the sunset... with Squidward..."

Week 08/52 (2nd post)

f13 | ISO400 | 42 seconds | 15mm

An incredibly windy night, luck enough to not be in the path of a dust storm heading my way. Continuing on my lenser orb theme this week, I went out to an area of Phoenix that was based on agriculture and did some shooting.

I really didn't know what to expect when I drove out on a simple Tuesday night, I didn't really think I would get too much out of it. Previous times that I went to shoot in this spot, I got yelled at. So this time, I went as far away from anything as possible. I loved it out there, it was really quiet out there and calming. A little reluctant about running through this giant field, I set up while questioning whether or not I should stay. The sun had just set and I was really tired and really didn't expect to be out here too long... I ended up for being there for two hours. It was a little miserable with some pretty serious winds but I managed pretty well.

As for as the actually shooting goes, it was a lot of trail and error. This particular one was taken near the end of the trip, right before I left. To my amazing luck, the almost full moon peered right through the clouds to light up the field just as I began this shot. I quickly ran out, did the orb, and then did a couple flashes above the camera to illuminate the grass a little, but I really didn't need it. I guess it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time, the full moon and wind seem to help me a lot in this case.

Post: Just Lightroom this time around, basic slider adjustments. Then re-sized in Photoshop.
Strobist Info: Flashed twice above the camera, aimed at the grass, by myself, full power, end of exposure.
