Boy in Sailor Suit with Long Stockings and Waschknopf (Platjenwerbe, 1940)

This German boy (about ten yeas old) is wearing the very popular sailor suit to school with black or dark brown long stockings with a knitted-in ring around the top. His garter waist (or Strapsleibchen) has elastic straps with a button-hole at the end which fastens onto a Waschknopf (= "laundry button") sewn into the tops of the long stockings. You can clearly see the button on both legs in this close-up detail from the entire Platjenwerbe class.

This little boy seems fully equipped for school with his book bag on his back, his peaked school cap, and his "goody cone" filled with sweets and other delights to mitigate the rigors of his introduction to academic displine. He wears the traditional school clohtes a suit with short trousers, bron (or tan) long stockings with a bodice and supporters (Leibchen), and strap shoes.

Notice the brown long stockings obviously worn with supporters fastened to a bodice. The hose supporter buttons are visible on the boy's upper legs. He seems about five or six.

A prosperous German mother in a fur coat with her young son, who is wearing short trousers with tan long stockings (with a garter waist). Notice the beret--also the large pretzel hanging around his neck--the welcome present from a Bavarian town, apparently.

The girl at the center of the picture is celebrating her confirmation (probably Lutheran0, and the family has gathered around her in support. Notice the two younger brothers, the older of whom is wearing a short trousers suit with knee socks; the younger boy is also in shorts with long stockings.

The youngest child (a girl of about ten) sports a rather long overcoat and a hat fixed at a rather sporty angle. The middle boy (about eleven or twelve) wears an overcoat over his school clothes--a short trousers suit with black long stockings. Notice the school cap. The oldest brother (also in school; not the school cap) is wearing an overcoat over a long trousers suit. He seems to be about seventeen.

The oldest sibling, in a handsome long trousers suit, is obviously the confirmand. He is beautifully dressed in a double breasted suit with white shirt and tie (with a spiffy white handkerchief in his breast pocket). His younger brother and sister are both wearing long stockings but with white knee socks over the stockings. Usually white knee socks or long stockings are worn independently as a concession to formality. It is not very often that we see both being worn at the same time. The boy (about nine or ten) in the short trousers suit is obviously wearing supporters to hold up his long stockings--clear from the smooth way they appear on his upper legs. He is probably wearing a Leibchen (or bodice) with four elastic garters. His sister must be wearing the sort of waist.

A cute moment of intimacy with Wolf-Dietrich on his potty and a toy. With his short pants off, the white elastic straps for his Leibchen to hold his long stockings in place are clearly visible. The boy is too young to feel an embarrassment, and the innocence is charming.
