The Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of preventing maternal deaths was described as a “disturbing” statistic in a recent ADB-UN report with few countries making headway in reducing the numbers. Across the region, an estimated 140,000 women died from causes related to childbirth in 2008 - one reason is that too few women deliver with a birth attendant.

Yen Fo, 13, is now back at school due to the support of an ADB-funded secondary school project in Lao PDR. She had been unable to attend as she did not have appropriate clothes and her family had no money for school supplies. "I am excited to come to school every day," she says. "I have many friends here and going to school is the best opportunity for me and my family."

Close to 100 million women are estimated to be "missing". This is due to pre-birth sex selection in which males are preferred, and excessively high numbers of girls dying due to neglect and discrimination. With more boys than girls born in Asia than any other region of the world, the male-female sex ration has widened to worrying levels in some countries.

Only about half the countries in the region have adopted laws on domestic violence. More than 40% of women in Bangladesh and Samoa and 60% of women in Kiribati and Solomon Islands have experienced physical violence by their intimate partners. In Papua New Guinea, the figure is close to two-thirds.

In Afghanistan, the literacy rate for women is around 12% and enrollment for girls in primary schools is around 36%. In spite of these low figures, a number of achievements have been made in the education sector for women, including the enrollment of an estimated 2.2 million girls in primary schools.

The status of women plays a vital role in a child's health. Women who are literate, well-informed and empowered are in a much stronger position to care for their children. Studies have also shown that women's participation in employment outside of the agricultural sector plays a role in reducing child malnutrition.

While Yingluck Shinawatra was elected as the country's first female prime minister by Thailand's parliament in 2011, countries like Nauru, Palau, Micronesia and the Solomon Islands have no women in their parliaments. Overall, women hold only 18% of legislative seats in Asia, and 15% in the Pacific, a large factor in limiting their power and voice.

An ADB-supported project in Nepal is helping some of the mos disadvantaged women in the country learn trades and build careers once reserved for men. "This project specifically targets women and disadvantaged groups," says Suman Subba, social development and gender officer with ADB's Nepal Resident Mission. "It provides basic education and skills training that allows for self-employment, salaried work, and even international employment."
